Kits are pretty cheap now - no more than £50 and even less if you shop around (but don't go too cheap or the quality will be compromised).
On the 2007 car with projector lights, you can fit the standard H7 kit but I would recommend the H7R on the phase 1 meganes to avoid dazzling others.
I've got HID's fitted to the headlamps (H7) and fog lamps (H11), as well as led lights for the side lights and numberplate lights - didn't see the point of doing the high beams. I drove my mate's 2006 plate with standard lights and felt the lights were really poor in comparison to the HID's in mine - even though I felt the standard lights in my car (before the mod) were a lot better than the standard lights in my Alfa. There's no going back to standard lights for me!
PS, SMD lights 'haze' the inside of the headlamp (I think when the solder burns off or something) so I'm using
