Creaking Windows With The Roof Down

Postby dphipp » Fri Mar 04, 2011 6:07 pm

With the roof down and all the windows down, whilst driving we get a lot of creaking from inside the doors. I also happens when the windows are up but not as bad. Any ideas on how to cure this irritating noise

Cheers :-)

Probably the body flexing, they are not the most rigid of cars with roof down. Try going round a roundabout with the roof down and the windows up it's scarey how much the gap between the windscreen and frame alters. :( :o

How old is the car? Does it sound like the glass squeeking? a metalic squeek?, plastic squeek?

Try a liquid silicone around the door and boot seals, mine creaks like mad when the seals get a bit dry, especially the boot, I am lucky enough to work in a garage so the valating bay has a tyre black, which is a clear liquid - 100% silicone so it does not mark alloys and last 10 times longer than the old black syrup they use to use, I rub this on my seals, squeeks and creaks gone!
May be worth a look next time you are in Halfrauds at the tyre blacks, to see if they do a 100% silicone one.
Could also be dry window runners, in your case it may be benificial to remove the door cards and give the runners a good squirt of WD40 or some other lubricating material, I would first be inclined to try and squirt it down the edges of the window to see if it hits the spot, I take it your doors do shut properly and have not dropped a bit as they are hefty doors.
Watch what you put on the rubbers some say vasalene but I found lots of crap then stuck to them which in the long run must ware them out and they did not "slide" very well either if at all really, silicone is the best way forward and also keeps the rubber moist so it does not dry out and become stiff, other than that I don't know what else to sugest!
They are quite "musical" cars when they get a bit older, most thing seem to be held in place via pop on clips not self tappers so once removed they weaken a bit and move, since replacing my HUD the pod now squeeks over some road surfaces, most anoying!
