Good question! I am looking at Wills pictures and they look the same as my rear seat space, so I am beginig to wonder myself now

Just go at it and try taking them out. When I first undid the 4 bolts I didnt know what to expect, but I couldnt see how anything would raise up with 4 bolts going straight through from one side to the other.

The manual mentions the 'Automatic safety bars' and how they raise 13cm in the event of the vehicle overturning.. Page 1.30

There is a note that the system is quite sensitive and on windy roads or any impact, the bars may be triggered and you will have to push them back in to reset.

So you could test them by rocking the car with the engine on and see if they deploy.

I expect they mount up in exactly the same way as the standard bars, From the picture, it looks like it's just a spring holding them down.

I've often wondered if mine has them, But I checked the door plate label and don't think it's one of the option codes listed..

Are you talking to Chris? as I know for a fact there would be no way that mine would have been able to raise with 4 bolts going through the bars which are 1 solid fixture. Rocking the car probably wont make them trigger as that will just simulate normal road movement. It needs a bang or a shock to trigger them. Plus do this with the top down if you do try it! You can take some photos of the fittments and post them on here if you want, I should be able to tell you if they were the same as mine.

Knowing the way Renault electrics are you will probally find that you will flip it fly in to a field upside down, slide on your head through cow pats once you come to a rest the air bags will go off, just to cover you in talc, then a few seconds after that the rear head rest will deploy to lift the car 13cm up so the cows can lick ya face, once the windows have gone down for no apparant reason as they tend to do with Renault, oh and the onboard sat nav will tell you it is still calculating your journey

Assuming it will start in the first instance......and achieve 'take off' speed.....without giving a warning light or breaking down first.

Very good point Morgan, I like!!!!

To be honest Will I have had quite a bad last year with mine, which didn't help much when the techs will not diagnose the full problem just bits of it so you end up working on the same area of the vehicle a couple of times s othe whole repair process was drawn out over the whole of the summer, but I must admit they are not the best build quality wise, everything seems to be clipped in not screwed, so like yours when new this is good but as the years pass and the car warms and chills, flexis and rolls every thing becomes a bit loose and squeeks, I think the set out is appauling, you have miles of room in the front yet you have to squeeze the seatbelt past the door and front seat as there is not really enough room to get at it, again miles of room up front but nothing for the rear passengers, I am around 6 foot so when we carry 4 people I either have to let my wife drive or sit ontop of the steering wheel, to the point we cant get a iso fix car seat + child behind my seat, it squashes the poor childs feet, when he is in it, there is more room in the back of my wifes 1999 Meg Coupe, and that is saying something, plus have you sat in the back seats, dam uncomfortable they try and bend you double and are a pig to get out of as you get on in years becasue of there shape, yet it is rather a large car, I have been running Fiats and Alfas before this, I bought my wife her 1999 Phase 2 1.4 petrol Coupe 7 years ago with 8k on the clock, in that 7 years it has had two drive shafts due to the usual Renault can't keep the boot clip on so it comes off the throws grease all around you wheel, if caught quickly ok if not a few months later you CV knock, it has had a clutch becasue the release bearing gave up, and two wheel beraings on the front only needed one but was mis diagnosed, oh and we finally had to cut off the origonal back box a few months back as it had holed, all we do is service it put cambelts and tyres on it, it is like a clockwork mouse, get in and away it goes! it now has 77k on it and still going strong, mine was bought on this pretence, but put em both together I am afraid the 1999 car will out last the CC, the quality of the build is by far superiour and not just by a bit either.
Isn't that white one called the "wind" they look great fun and a dedicated two seater, supose they have to do sometihng to combat the Astra TT who is also going to a twin seat now as well.

Sounds tough!! I think what ever car we may have is always luck of the draw.

No the car ive put up there is the new Megane CC, the wind is allot smaller than that, and in my opinion very plasticy inside!

The chrome bars look good, it's a shame they don't make them a bit cheaper!

The last time I had a front tyre changed, the guy jacked the car up and that triggered the
Roll bars. Had to do a reset to get rid of the warning light on the dash. I was surprised
They were so sensitive. No problems since though.

looks quite small, could be the way the picture is taken or simply the colour, doesn't seem to look as cumbersome as the older CC, looks quite neat and tight, if you know what I mean. we have just got another Renault dealer again locally, garages seem to taken them on then after a year get rid, seems they have not changed much regarding their relationship with the dealers, we had em around 9 years ago, and they where awful to the dealer.
we where glad to see them gone in the end, the cars didn't seem much worse than most other makes really apart from wiring and water leaks seem to be the bug bear with them at that time, we got rid around 2002, I think they where with us around 5 years. our trouble was not so much the cars but Renault themselves.

Thats a shame that is Chris. Mine seem to be quite good. The CC has gone in today with an annoying vibration in the dash (under warranty)

Yes my wifes meg 1 Phase 2 Coupe is very good, no trouble at all considering it is from 1999, relativly trouble free. the trouble with actually being a dealer is you never see the good ones, all you see are the broken ones or service due ones.
Vibration under dash I seem to have that as well mine seems to be around the speedo area and the center dash trim with the headup in it, it was awful a few weeks back but replacing the lower engine mount (dog bone or engine stabilizer) to name a few terms has cut a lot out but it has not gone fully, I think I may have to change top engine mount, the big boy at around £100, yours should be covered by warranty unfortunatly mine is not.
Loved your road trip and left a comment, we are off to Yorkshire next week for a few days up around Newsham, hope for a few nice days!
