In my non expert opinion.
If you go up hills, for example on motorways, you shouldnt have to change gear from 5 or 6 and it should not lose speed too easily.
The main "feel" should be between 1500 to 2200 revs, it should feel like its accelerating faster that from 1000 to 1500.

Set off in 1st gear on a level road. Keep your foot off the throttle so you are going at walking pace leaving the idle to just potter along. Now, floor the pedal. If all is working as advertised, the car will accelerate very slowly until the revs hit around 1500 RPM, then you should hear a faint whistle and it should take off like a rocket. When you change to 2nd gear, release the throttle VERY abruptly and you will hear a valve make a brief wooshing noise that vents air to prevent the compressor from stalling or an over-boost situation.
Best fuel economy is at 2000 RPM. Therefore you should aim to maintain this engine speed by varying the gear you drive in according to the speed limit. There is an exception - trying to accelerate with full throttle and not being able to - this is known as labouring the engine and is bad for the bearings - change down a gear.

Any gear..... well except reverse
Re: How to know when turbo kicks in help?
My commute is mostly motorway at 65-70 on cruise control..
But I have a hill on the way home which I attack in 3rd gear and rev the engine up to 0.5k rpm below the redline to 'exercise' the turbo and blow any soot out.
My 1995 Audi A6 2.5 TDI Quattro had a knackered turbo, and it was on this hill that I could tell it wasn't working as it should..
I'm always impressed that I don't leave a cloud of black smoke on the hill in the CC as I used to in the Audi..

When you get stuck behind something quite slow, you bob out and floor it and nothing happens bar a little bit of acceleration, and your instant thought is OH S*+*T then off it goes like the wind, apparantly this is called Turbo lag and can give you some heart stopping moments before it kicks in.....

Re: How to know when turbo kicks in help?
the turbo on the 20bhp model gives good acceleration with out being over the top.
i work in a garage with all the diagnostic machines and have just fitted a new garret gt1749 turbo
on my megane 1.9 dci and now can hardly hear it and the boost is very smooth.
i was concerned at first about the lack of a sudden power surge but after runnung it on the computer everything is
working within it's limits ie boost pressure, variable vane's, emmisions.
the boost is controlled by the ecu on this model and the actuater on the turbo has nothing to do with a wastegate as it does on some turbos
and is there to control the variable vanes inside the turbo
hope that helps

Re: How to know when turbo kicks in help?
for peace of mind you can remove plastic engine cover.there is a intake pipe that goes from front to back over the top of the engine to the inlet manifold .
at the front of the engine a rubber intercooler pipe connects to the alloy pipe. seperate these pipes and get some one to start and rev the car and you should feel a sudden rush of air and also hear the turbo better.
if thats all fine just reconnect everything and stop worrying.
also you can fold down the rear seats and remove the boot carpet. turn radio off and find a nice length of road and make the car pull thou the revs.
you should hear a whoosh noise from around the rear box area which is the compressed exhaust gas from the turbo suddenly hitting the back box which is normal.
hope this helps
