NO DIAL ILUMINATION AND HALF DASH LIGHTS OUT

Postby rob_s » Tue Nov 30, 2010 7:01 pm

hi,not posted on here much ,had the megane a few months now

pleased with it still BUT it has gained a few problems so if anyone has the anser please let me know :)

its a 2007 1.5dci dynamique

1,dials dont always light up anymore first got it a few weeks ago...now its happening at leasted twice a week now! and obv with it being dark a lot more its a pain!
2,dash lights weerd! again never noticed untill its started getting darker but some of the buttons on my dash arnt iluminated
ac switch,rear window de mist
cigarette lighter surround (works somtimes)
and when adjusting the heater controls somtimes they come on and then go back off and the sterio has no ilumination (not sure if they are ment to?)
and iv upgraded the front speakers to some alpine typeS components....but still anything over volume 15 they start going crackly by 18 its unlistenable and thats with the bass turned completely off?
i thauht changeing the speakers would sort this as they worked fine in my 106? or could it be the back ones now need doing aswell?

and how easy is it to upgrade the headunit,iv not touched it due to so many horror storys with the modern french electrics but its crap so needs to go i like my music when driving lol ie what adapter leads are needed etc?

cheers rob

If the sound started being distorted after you swapped the original units, then you probably have mismatched impedances. I don't know what the originals are - I spend my money on restoring old valve equipment and listen to music at home - not in the car (might fit a valve amp on the parcel shelf. That would be interesting!) Anyhow, if the head unit is expecting a nominal resistance of say 8 ohms, and your Type S are 4 or 2 ohm, it could cause distortion.

If the head unit was distorting using OEM kit, then it's either knackered or has poor power connections. What you are describing sounds like clipping where the voltage swing required isn't reached either because the amp cannot drive the load adequately, or because there is a voltage drop at the 12V input, or because the output transistors are kaput. You can actually damage the speakers when this happens by overheating the voice coils.

The other option is that the speaker suspensions are damaged or the cones are split.

Best advice for Megane owners: sell it before it bankrupts you!
