hi

today driving home from work my megane 04 plate started to get abit shaky and the engine light began to flash
on acceleration it was very slow to pick up when i pulled over to check what was going on i could hear a sound like a
repeated whooshing noise (whoosh-whoosh-whoosh)coming from the rear of the car when my engine was running
i decided to try and get it home about 5miles couldn't get over 40mp even less on a slight hill
when i did try to accelerate there was like an unknown rattle coming from within the engine

any help would be wonderful

Until someone gives you some sensible advice, search this site for 'dephaser' or 'coil pack'.

If the engine will idle, hold a rag over the exhaust pipe and listen for any gas escaping sounds.

Would the engine not rev above 3000rpm? If so that is 'limp home' mode whereby the ECU (computer) detects a fault and tries to prevent further damage by limiting the engine maximum revolutions per second.

You could get the fault codes read using an ELM327 interface (ebay) or by taking to a local garage.

Other things that crop up are various sensors.

Someone who owns a 1.6 will give you better advice.

i have booked it in tomorrow to the garage tomorrow
how much would you think it would be for coils? and how much for dephaser if this is the reason?

I would say coil packs too, happened on ours, needed 2 of them, cost about 40 quid in total (used a mates garage at the time so no labour)

changed coil pack £55 sorted now

is £55 around the right price

I would say 55 is about right, I paid 38 i think it was (rounded upto 40 for ease in earlier post), but didn`t pay for fitting as my mates garage fitted them

One coil is about £10 on ebay, the whole pack is £40. Make sure they used the insulating grease during installation, or the coils will fail again.

I spoke to a RAC bloke about this, he said its nonsense? What does the 'insulating grease' insulate against, electricity/water???

Sounds like a coil, it's in limp mode. I have to agree about the grease, useless

I don't disagree, but the need in using the grease is emphasised in the manual and again in the Technical Note. It prevents surface discharge, as I understand. People, however, analysed what actually fail in these coils. It looks like the solid insulator fails due to micro-defects. It is not clear to me whether the surface discharge contributes to it or not.
