Automatic Headlights

Postby goonerjon » Wed Jul 21, 2010 12:31 pm

Hello
I recently took my 54 Megane to a garage for some work and they have somehow turned off the automatic headlights. Does anyone know how you turn them back on?
Your help is appreciated!
Thanks
JB

Hold down the button on the end of the left hand stick for a few seconds whilst the engine is off.
It will flash on the dash saying automatic lights on, or something like that.

And thats all there is to it :)

No no not when the engine is off... when it is ON.

Button on the end of the indicator stalk that says AUTO. Hold it in while the engine is on until you hear a beep.

Mine get deactivated everytime the mechanic has it... does my head in.

Are you sure you have auto headlights? If so.. I'd say faulty sensor. Do the auto wipers work?

The auto wipers for the front work ok, my rear wiper doesnt work at all, dont know why, been looking for am wiring diagram, i checed the wiper motor thats good, and the fuse is good.

I am wondering if auto lights and the rear wiper could have beem disabled by renault in the past ?

The rear wiper isn't automatic. The headlights should work still...

When you hold down the auto button, is there any beeps or messages? I think it needs to be held for 5-10 seconds.
Other than that, i don't think Renault will have disarmed them, or even if they could do.

i did this the other day in my 05.

basically, engine on, braked (not sure if it was handbrake or just foot brakes) and hold the auto button down for about 5 seconds. you get a beep but nothing displayed on screen.

I get no beep and no message, headlights work fine turning them on manually.
Also the rear wiper changes the intermittant pulse with engine speed, and should do a single wipe everytime reverse is selected, it doesnt do anything ever, does spray water back there though.

I did read that renault can disable the auto light function as people often complained about the sensitivity.
I have also heard of people having the rear wiper disabled to allow a bike carrier to be fitted, as they often rest on the rear screen and the megane does a single wipe every time reverse is selected.

Dont fancy paying the stealers to find this out though.

If I purhase the cable myself will any of the software about allow me to check these things.

Cheers.

Ahh i see, well that would make more sense.

Not sure on the software, i've not got a OBD device.
I'm sure someone on here can have a quick look for you though.

I think the one everyone seems to get is the ELM 327, have a look around and see what it can do.

Hope you get them back working anyway.

No, this can only be done with Clip computer, which costs several hundred pounds.

The best way is to go to some garage who have a multibrand OBD machine and turn that ON the ECU configuration, its something like sensor "Present" or "Not present", in your case should be "present" but maybe for the causes said before is configured with "not present"...in my car ive switched off the seat belt warning beep, just had to enter the ECU config and configure it to "Not present" on the seat belt sensor and thats it, never annoyed me again with that beep stuff

cheers

Will none of the software allow you to enable or disable these features ?
I would have thought the software was more flexible than the hand held odb units.

Cheers.

Absolutely right. The OBD interface only accesses the standard functions relevant to emissions control. Everything else is accessed through a proprietary manufacturer's interface, which is Clip for Renault. This, however, does not mean that only the dealers can access it. Clip, for example, is available on ebay.
