How I improved my MPG

I've picked up some advice from the forum, so thought I'd feed back my experiences.

I was getting low 40's MPG at the start. I then went down the motorway for a few miles in 4th gear and kept the revs over 3000, I did this twice in a week, and my mpg improved overall by about 5 mpg. (someone on the forum advised this).

I then put in BP Diesel Ultimate and I got another 5 mpg improvement.

I took a 100 mile run, at top legal speed and was getting about 60 mpg ! Its went down subsequently with city driving, but overall, I'd say a 10 Mpg improvement.

So thanks for the advice and hopefully someone else will find this useful.

If it wasn't on this forum it was on Renault forum.

The advice was to drive at high revs for a few miles as this can help move build ups of something or other through the system.

And I do - do the light right foot driving minimal braking stuff.


But here is a question I have - though it might seem stupid..... Going up a fairly steep hill, is it better to be in 3rd gear and go slower, or just go in fourth (as long as the engine isn't labouring). (by better I mean, engine transmission stuff - sound so stupid) - Or at the end of the day, do it in whatever gear you want, and whichever uses less revs without labouring the car - is the best ?

Going up hill is best around rpm where the engine has maximum torque, which is at least at 2000 rpm for your engine. Going under 2000 rpm will make ECU pump more fuel to gain torque/power artificially. If the revs fall down gradually under 2000 rpm (when driving up hill) shift down so you drive at least at 2000 rpm or more. It is very important not to press the accelerator pedal when going up hill, that's simply wasting fuel. Shift down instead and keep revs around 2000 rpm. And yes, if you drive your car in the 4th gear around 3000 rpm for a couple of miles it will help burn the soot in the system. Tyre pressure is also worth checking every 2 weeks or so: I keep mine at 2.4 Bar front (a lot of motorway driving, that's why I have 2.4 on front) and 2.0 Bar rear.

i have a Megane 1.5DCI (80 BHP) which did around 47 mpg so i fitted a chip box to see how it would improve now i get around 60 mpg the chip box cost me £25 from ebay second hand should pay for its self in 3 weeks

I've found lifting the throttle when going down hill and letting the cars weight push against the engine gains loads.
Can get past 50mpg in a 1.6vvt!

Had my 05 1.5 (80) dci estate for 1 day now.

Mainly town driving, reset the trip meter/obc before driving away.

I am currently getting 67-68 mpg. I will have a more accurate idea once I have gone through a few tanks, but by the looks of it, it will take some time!!

I have got 70+ average in an identical model when I borred it for a month a while ago. These things really do sip fuel like a fine wine!

You must have a very heavy right foot to only get 47mpg from an 80bhp 1.5- I have the 106bhp version and i easily average 55+mpg and i dont drive slowly.
