The diagrams, for example, may show inconsistent temperature readings, which will cause the ECU to stay in the warming up mode (rich mixture - smell), or may show increased calculated load at idle, which is a characteristic of dirty throttle body. O2 sensors may be playing up, the MAF sensor may be giving inconsistent readings due to air leaks or blockages, etc.
One more idea. Disconnect the dephaser valve temporarily. Your engine is supposed to idle normally without it and the car will drive fine in low revs. If an improvement is detected, then you'll know where to look for a fault. BTW, are you sure that the timing was done properly when changing the dephaser? Most garages employ people who don't read the manuals...
