DCI... REMAP OR TUNING BOX

Hi all any one who can give me pro's and cons on the above please come forward. I used to have my old DCi mapped to 150BHP but Dont really know anything about the tuning boxes. Any info will be very useful thanks.

Sorry mate but not all are 30p resistors. Digital tuning boxes have multiple maps, are perfectly safe and offer real bang for buck. You get what you pay for remember.

so you'll be paying more for a digi box when a normal proper map covered by the company is only few ££'s more why take the risk
search the froum its a love hate thing but theres a lot of complaints on here with problems and things arising from having one just a thought as im allowed my opinion :D


I have no problem with you voicing your opinion but you seemed to generalise them all as 30p resistor bags of poo, which is not the case.

In terms of cost I can see what your saying with some rip off models but I got mine, a digital one, for half the price of a remap. It is removable at your leisure, can be remapped to work on other diesels and it has a very good resale value.

On older turbo diesels the way to get more power was to turn the fuel and the boost up a bit manually. These decent tuning boxes simply do the same but through electronics because you cannot adjust it manually.

Simples.

Now keep it calm lads! The 30p resistors are a waste of space. Digital tuning boxes are crude (generally alter the injector timings over the whole rev range), a remap will give you a tailored increase if done correctly. There is no argument about the benefits and losses. You will gain quite a bit on a turbo diesel, at the slight expense of engine life if the vehicle is service properly and has no underlying faults. As for the debate about heat dissipation - unless you are driving across the Saudi desert, forget it.

If you go for whats called a live/custom Map you get what you ask for so say for example you want youre car boosted up to 150 from the 1.9DCi 130 that can be done easily, if you want it up to 160 that can be done also.

what you get is a custom map to what you want.

I paid £180 for my Kia to get mapped from 90 to 125 (i've got it booked in for a re-tune to 150 £40)

you can get a remap almost as cheap as a tuning box, there also better for the car than a tuning box.


Best thing to do is to look around see what tuning companies there is where you live ask people what there like if there good bad etc and choose one and ask what they can do for you.



Also Eddie, a remap inproves the MPG you get from your car, its a good investment where you want it for power or for the increase in MPG, after i mapped my Meggy i was getting almost 80mpg

As davelowe said, problems with heat dissipation - complete boll*cks!

In no way am I saying they are better than a good remap because they aren't, but if you take into consideration initial cost and the other points I raised plus the fact that Renault might routinely flash you ecu at a service resulting in the loss of your custom map, the choice is entirely down to your preference and budget.

At the end of the day you pay your money and take your chance, with both a box and a remap. If a car isn't looked after properly it will eventually go wrong at some point.

All I can tell you is my experience of a good tuning box (notice the word good) and that is more power, torque and better MPG. To me that points at better efficiency. If you search and read old posts about tuning boxes you will notice there are a lot more positive things said than negative. If it's not for you, it's not for you, but you instantly dismissed them all as being cr*p.

The box I have has been reviewed and recommended by Car Mechanics Magazine and those guys know what they are talking about. There is no smoking at all on a medium/high setting so it is not over fuelling/boosting just giving a bit more grunt. I haven't tried the very highest setting because I do not need any more power, but I'm sure it is the same story.

I was gettin 1000 miles to a tank when taken sort of easy, hokin it to it your still geting 700+

you'll make your money back either way with a box or a map

Its not worth the hassle, to much strain on the clutch. Got mine remapped at 36k and had it remapped upto 150bhp but clutch cant handle the extra torque. have heard of simular problems from other dci120 owners. keep it standard

are you harsh on the clutch?

My meggy had about 40k on the clock when i got it mapped, sold it with almost 70k and the clutch was still good, though t was only the 1.5

This has nothing to do with someone being harsh on the clutch. Every clutch is designed for certain torque (let alone the DMF, which is an expensive piece of equipment), and when you do the remap, you raise the torque which in turn raises strain on the clutch.
