Postby kateALLEN » Sat May 09, 2009 7:03 pm

Hi. I drive a 53 plate Renault Megane,1.5dci. I was driving my car today, I accelerated and and changed up into 3rd gear, about 10 seconds after there was a bang and the car judderd a little. I drove it home but when trying to accelerate over 2500 revs there's no power and it still judders. The exhaust seems to be more bassey aswell now! Can anyone help me please?! Thanks

It's broken, Kate. Not much can be said unless you make an effort to describe everything relevant in detail. In the case of doubts regarding relevance -- tell it. You may easily be looking at more than £1000 of repairs.

A word of warning: the engine may be loosing oil. If you drive it and the low oil light appears, you will have a couple of seconds only before the engine becomes irreparably damaged. It may also start accelerating on its own and subsequently revving to its death, which is a scary experience.

As AlexB say's it's not a well puppy and the only way to find out what's wrong is to let a reputable qualified mechanic (not technician) diagnose what went bang and why you have no power.

Let us know how you get on

Hi, Thanks for replying to me! I will be taking it to a garage asap because it doesn't sound too good!! I've read up on the internet about the problem and there's mention of the EGR valve being stuck in the closed position and it being a common fault on the early models of 1.5dci's,does this sound possible and has anyone heard of this problem?! Let's all hope my cars not knackerd!!

Yes EGR valves do get gummed up (mainly on 1.9dCi's), never heard of one going bang though?

If the valve is stuck then this could be the reason for your lack of oomphh...

Lack of power can be due to the computer protecting the engine... In any case one needs to start with a very detailed description of the service history, circumstances when the fault occurred and the computer test in addition to the basic inspection.

Hi guys.....My car is now fixed!! Woooohoooooo!!!! It was the plastic intake pipe to my turbo that had totally snapped-obviously causing the loss of power!! Even better, I got it fixed for £70! Thanks for all your replies and I hope this helps someone in the future. Kate :D
