Engine Problem

Postby swift85 » Tue Apr 14, 2009 3:23 pm

Hello and before i start Id like to apoligise. This question has probablly been asked a thousand times before but i had a search and although there where similar problems I couldnt find anything to clarify completely and was wondering if anyone has had the same problem as me.

Ok so

The Problem

Basically i bought my car 53 plate Renault Megane 1.5dci (85) around 3 weeks ago. When i drove the car it did think it felt a little sluggish however having never driven an 85bhp diesel before i put it down to the low powered engine and thought nothing more of it.

So last week my Girlfriend decided against my will that we would be making a trip to IKEA

This involves a short blast up the M62. Basically i got on the Motorway and got upto speed around 65-70 then procedded to enter the middle lane to pass a lorry. As i put my foot down the car got to around 75mph and wouldnt go any faster. I had my foot flat on the floor and it was just sat there. At this point a light came on the Dash saying "Check Injection" and the "Service" light also made an apperance at this point the car began slowing down (With my foot still flat to the floor) So i pulled in behind the lorry and slowed down to around 50mph. The lights went out and the car seemed fine sat at 50.

The car does seem very very slow at lower speeds and just doesnt seem to pull through the gears in the slightest.

When i got home i opened the bonnet and there seemed to be oil at the front left of the engine it looked like it had hit a spinning belt of some sort as it was speckled arond a bit.

I called the Dealer i bought it from (Not Renault) who suggested i take it down there. The guy who owns the Garage seemed to think there was 2 problems i.e. the oil leak and the engine trouble so he booked it in at another Garage.

After doing a bit of research i've read lots about the EGR Valves on the Diesels getting clogged up and explained to the mechanic that this may be the problem.

He called today to say they have run a dignostic check however no faults have come up. So they have a guy coming tommorow with an even more Awesome diagnostic machine.

Has anyone had a similar experiance (Basically the car wont go over 70) or any info as to what the problem may be as im maikng a 2 hour journey as soon as the cars fixed and want to make sure its right and there not trying to fob me off.

Any help would be great. And sorry its a bit of a read.

Thanks Jake. :D

EDIT:

Just spoke to the Garage and they said there is a split intercooler pipe. When i asked if this would cause the power loss they seem to think it would as the Turbo would be losing Pressure.

Does this sound like it makes sense?

Thanks

Yes, it makes sense.

Early Laguna II 1.9dci had a habit of blowing the intercoolers and subsequently the turbocharger itself. The turbo can be damaged as it tries to "inflate" the atmosphere and, therefore, spins too fast. I hope this did not happen, but still watch the oil consumption and listen for abnormal whine from the turbo.

Another question is what caused the intercooler to split. Good if it was due to an accident or a manufacturing fault. It can also be a problem with the pressure control of the turbo, which is not so good. Once the intercooler is replaced, I suggest to connect the laptop (see ELM327 interface on ebay) to the EOBD diagnostic socket and drive while recording the operating parameters.

Ask the garage if they see any oil in the intercooler pipes. Some spray is fine, but if there is half a litre, then the turbo must be looked at...

Ah well i suppose its good news then that they may have found the problem. Bad news however that it may have done some serious damage. I will ask them about the oil in the pipes.

Not sure im upto the challenge of running my own diagnostics whilst driving it all sounds a little complictaed.

Cheers for all the help though. Much apprectiated.
