Subtle upgrades

Postby Matt_Cardiff » Tue Feb 10, 2009 4:57 pm

I have a bit of money to spend on my Megane Authentique, but could do with some suggestions. I don't want to do anything drastic, or over the top - but does anybody have pictures of things they've done to their car, perhaps that I could gather some ideas from?

I'd call mine subtly modded: lowered, bigger wheels for the summer, some shiny bits (door handles, window trim), black side repeaters, black or chrystal rear lights (depending on mood). Nothing too obvious but I think enough to make it look a bit special. Lowering and bigger wheels alone will do wonders.

Colour-coding the rub strips and door strips will make a big difference, especially on a light coloured car.

They both look cool, cheers for the pics guys. How much am I looking at to have the bumpers colour coded? I also like the idea of the chrome door handles you both have, where do I look for them - ebay? I'm not sure whether silver handles would suit my car mind, I have the light green coloured megane.

As for alloys, I'm getting these early next month - and also lowering it slightly.

Those wheels should suit the Megane nicely, just make sure you get proper tyre size: 205/50R17 or 225/45R17. Those three sizes available on the page you linked to are too small for the Megane II.

Thanks for the info, I've just contacted them to see if they do either of the tyre sizes you've just listed. If they do not, would it be a bad idea to use any of the 3 that they have available on the website?

The alloy dealer has replied, and they do stock 205x50x17 but it would take the overall cost to £520. With the 3 tyres listed in the link, the total cost is £399. That's a big difference, is it that important I have the 205x50x17 as opposed to the other 3? I don't really understand all this and would be grateful for some help.

Cheers.

Basically you need to get the overall diameter as close to the recommended size as you can, the speedo reading wont be accurate either and ride might be a bit harsher.

Plus it'll look ridiculous (in my opinion...) to have such tiny tyres in the humongous Megane wheelarches. By tiny I mean that the tyre sidewall will be significantly lower than it should be, as the "50" in the 205/50R17 describes the sidewall height as a percentage in relation to the tyre width. Let's do a little math to show you how high your sidewall would be for the different tyre sizes:

Sidewall height
205/50R17: 0.50x205mm = 102.5mm (this is the original tyre size fitted by Renault to cars with the 17" option)
225/45R17: 0.45x225mm = 101.25mm
215/40R17: 0.40x215mm = 86mm
205/40R17: 0.40x205mm = 82mm
205/45R17: 0.40x205mm = 92.25mm

As we can see, in the worst case scenario (205/40R17) the sidewall is over 20mm lower! Meaning that the overall diameter of the tyre will be over 40mm smaller than it should be. That'll already make the car look seriously "under-shod". If you absolutely must choose from those three sizes, then take the 205/45R17. It has a sidewall "only" 10mm too low.

Did they give you a price for the 225/45R17 option? It's probably a more common size and offered by more manufacturers than the 205/50R17 and might possibly be less expensive. Don't take my word on that though....
