I just had a service for my 2004 Megane.
Its only done 25,000 miles but they're saying that the front and rear brake discs need replacing.
Is it normal for Megane brake discs to wear out so quickly?
How much is it going to cost me?
Thanks

Re: Brake Discs
Yes they provided some measurements - 22.2mm for the front and 9.7mm for rear
So its 0.4mm above the minimum for front and 0.7mm above th min for rear.
How long will that last before it needs replacing?
ANd the other strange thing is that the brake pads have outlasted the discs. That cant be right?
Thanks

Re: Brake Discs
There is something wrong with the rear disc measurement. Min thickness is 21.8 and 6.5mm correspondingly. New rear disc is 8mm thick.
Your annual mileage is low. It is possible that the disks suffered from corrosion.
I am using GreenStuff pads from EBC -- read about them. They feel much better, wear discs less and give less dust.

Thanks AlexB
I'll ask the garage about the measurements again.
I've double checked the numbers and its what they have stated on the service sheet.
Cheers,
Kev

Re: Brake Discs
Thanks for all your help. I wished I found this website earlier. I've had all the problems that come up regularly - dephase pulley, ignition coils etc.!!
I went back to the garage for a quote and they said it will cost £550 to replace all discs. They said the pads will be replaced as part of the change (hence the high cost) .
Is it OK to replace the discs without the pads? That might save me £150.00
Cheers,
Kevin

Re: Brake Discs
ngkmn,
Can confirm I have had a similar experience re brakes and can confirm that the details above are correct re the wear.
I'm down to the limit on my fronts (but there's still an inch left ! 25 mm) and the rears are 7 mm and the limit is 6.5mm.
Local "dealer" quoted 2 x £ 300.
I think the point is that this "vehicle" needs to replace its disc regularly - I've done 45 k miles and will be glad when this pile of junk goes - never to be replaced by anything from this incompetent manufacturer ever again !

Re: Brake Discs
I have done 38,000 miles in my Megane, and the front discs need to be changed in about 2-3000 miles from its last service report, done by my mates dads Renault specialist garage. Renault said they needed to be changed at 28,000 miles........they werent even half worn!
Its the same story with our UK Scenic. We got the car at 38,000 miles, the service history, full Renault at that (last owner must have been an absolute mug to have to serviced by them as we have the bills for it) said all the discs were 80% worn. It was serviced at 47,000 miles, and my mates garage checked them over. There not 80% worn, there 65% worn!!! Its now at 51,000 miles, just had its cambelt and water pump done, and backbox as that went, we asked to double check the brakes again, now 70% worn!
So overall, it depends on how you drive. I drive my Megane quite hard, hence the front discs needing to be changed, but 40,000 for just front discs isnt too bad. The Scenic, driven by my mum, isnt driven hard, and it isnt either when I drive it, but it seems to me Renault are out for your wallet at anytime...especially when they quoted us £600 for the Scenic, £340 for the Megane! My mates dads garage???? all round discs AND pads, £290 inc VAT, front discs and pads...£165 inc VAT...and that isnt mates rates either!
I have always said it, shop around, and dont let Renault take advantage of your wallet.

I got quoted £169 today for front pads and discs which are needed (had MOT today). Will be taking that up in a few weeks.

just stick `megane discs` into search, can`t remember what the place is called at the moment but it`s a motorists shop selling good qaulity stuff in failsworth, manchester, luckily it`s local to me so i picked em up,but for `not locals`,postage is a tenner. well worth checking out IMO.
