Suspension Ball Joint.....

Postby banned » Fri Jun 06, 2008 8:39 am

Hey guys, just had my Meganes MOT yesterday, it failed on a Suspension Ball Joint - Excessive Movement on the drivers side. The guy said that it can be pretty serious and would need to be replaced before the car would pass.

Just wondering if anyone else has had a ball joint replaced?..... if so how much did it cost?

I phoned my local Renault garage (Charles Hurts - Northern Ireland) they are robbing b@$tards & are looking £88 just to look at the thing before they would even quote a repair price.

So would like to know what others have paid for a ball joint, so that i know if they are trying to rip me off (which i'm sure they will)

Cheers

m8 im from belfast and my 04 megane failed two weeks ago on the exact same thing....only both of mines were away with it. I got my parts from Mac Auto Parts £55 each then it cost 60 pound to fit them.

The phone number for Mac Auto Parts is 02890 747333

Theyre situated in North Belfast

Hope this helps.

I paid €26 for a balljoint (a quality Lemförder/TRW item) which is somewhere in the £15 region, isn't it? The same part by Delphi would have been only €20, but I chose the more expensive Lemförder one as their reputation for quality is quite excellent. A hydraulic press is needed to change the balljoint, but luckily I have a friend with access to one.

Renault won't sell you the balljoint separately, they only do a complete lower suspension arm for which I was quoted €177 per side!!! A non-OE complete arm would have cost me around €100 apiece.

EDIT: Funny thing my car passed its MOT with flying colours, but two weeks later when I went to a tyre specialist to have the wheel alignment checked after fitting the lowering kit and new tyres, they wouldn't touch the car before the badly worn balljoint had been changed! Goes to prove the MOT people don't spot all the faults, not even quite obvious ones....

Mark much appriciated for the number to the mac auto parts, luckly enough i only got failed on the drivers side. i got a quote for a price of £115 all in including labour which seems about right in the price you're saying you paid.

But will hold on to that Mac Auto Parts number, always good to know things like that, cos at least you know exactly how much you're paying for the part.
