Parking Brake woes

Postby mcfluffle » Mon Apr 14, 2008 7:42 pm

Hi all,
I'm new to the site, found out about it while searching for any info on my current problem. I bought an 03 1.9DCi Dynamic in August 07 and mostly love the car, even the rendom electrics haven't upset me much, but my parking brake is driving me mad. When I bought the car the brake needed pulled up quite far before working, needless to say I asked the dealer to fix it which they duly did, then 3 weeks ago I had a total parking brake failure, happened to be near a local Quickfit and asked them to take a look, they said they couldn't do anything as they were unable to get the cables as the car was too new????
Anyway tracked down the cables myself and took the car to another garage who fixed the problem, apparently the cables "fell out of their housing"?? and it was a matter of popping them back in again and tightening things up a bit, now i've just had another failure!!!!! :cry
Has anyone else experianced this problem? Any suggestions for a longer term solution would be greatly appreciated don't really fancy paying £40 every 2 -3 weeks to sort out brakes!! :mad

Hi there

Simple answer to this one. If you needed to pull your handbrake up a long way to make it work, it needed adjusting, that is why the cables could posssibly pop out of their housings/retaining clips.

As a rule of thumb - I have never needed to pull any more than "3 clicks" on either of our megs to fully activate the handbrake.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply Rob.
got my car sorted, apparently the cables came loose at the rear this time as they weren't reseting properly when handbrake was released, garage repaired it free of charge as it happened so soon after the last repair!!! :D Fingers crossed i'll hve no more problems and it only takes 1 or 2 clicks to fully engage the handbrake even on a steep hill - a first for me in this car!!!
