WATER in door pockets!

Postby james_k » Wed Jan 09, 2008 12:40 pm

hey, has anyone's car had water leaking into the inside lower door pockets,
mine did not long after i had first brought the car, but now has started leaking again, booked in on the 15th to get it sorted,
just wondering if it was a common fault with them?

Yes I'm afraid so m8, design fault I am sure ......mines is at the dealers just now, either coming in the door or aircon pipe....bit of a bummer, but you got to love the car though

Extremely common fault and should be fixed under warranty as it is known to Renault. apparently its caused by the speaker not being sealed properly, it is a quick job although mine still leaks as i've never got round to having it done.

Update on mine :( Car will be off the road until Friday , seeminly the water is coming in from the wheel arch (not where you change the bulbs), so they have had to order parts from France, not sure of the parts but will find out when I go to pick it up on friday.....new one on me thats for sure, not worrying though all covered under warrenty, plus they said my car will be fully valeted....inside anyway , not bothered about the inside.

right peeps i seem to have fixed my problem. il explain with some dodgy ms paint diagrams. this may have been done before, but in anycase heres my explanation.

as i said in this post the last time it really rained heavy i had 1 inch of water in each front door pocket of the car.

Image

so i took my speaker cover/panel thingy off, unscrewed the speaker and removed it from its mount and disconnected the cable.

got a small-ish plastic bin bag and placed it in the the hole where the speaker would be. cut a small hole in the bag for the cable to come thru and sealed it tight again with tape. then i connected the speaker back to the cable and screwed it back in.

Image

duct tapped all the excess plastic up to the door panel to seal the water out. finally (and this may not even needed done) i used a bit of silicon to seal the wee groove you can see at the bottom of the speaker mount where it meets with the door pocket just incase it was to let water in there. placed the speaker cover back on. and all is hidden.

we have had a few nights since with real heavy rain and the most i go was 2 wee drops in the passenger pocket. hope this helps.

Looks good to me Kyle i think i'll look into doing mine when the "nice" weather here in North Wales arrives  Took mine to Renault couple of years back when it was in warranty and was told they could find nothing wrong and i must of had a bottle of water in there. Wish i'd pushed for a repair now but as it doesn't seem to happen with every bout of rain i left it.

only initial problem i see with this is that u need to have a port of some sort to let the air escape from behind the speaker.

could well be right iceman. i done mine a few weeks ago and all seems fine so far. im sure air can get in from the front cause the speaker mount itself would'nt be air tight. and what about boxed in speakers how would they deal with the lack of air n all that. ie. subs and even like surround speaker in your house?? any ideas?

speakers need free air both back and front to function properly, sound is created by pushing air backwards and forwards, the more air you can push the better, good quality home speakers all have ports into the rear enclosure to help this and major ones have fancy wavetubes to increase their effect and sound quality (have a look at BOSE), some subs are sealed but these have rear enclosures that have been designed to have the optimum cubic area of air to push about and give a tight response plus the speakers themselves are designed to be run in such a way.
but at end of day if it sounds good and you can hear it over the car/road noise and your pockets are dry WTF.
