Problem with your Megane? Can't find an answer? Workshop manuals and technical notes are in here.

I changed coil but still problem..

Postby fireman1979 » Mon Jan 14, 2008 7:27 am

Guys sorry i'm writing again but i still have problem  Friday i changed the coil in a local garage and i've noticed that my car didn't fixed quite well. The problem that appears now is that: when i try to accelerate and the engines rounds are low (till 2000 rpm), the engine is shaking (try to accelerate but pauses for a while, continuously) till the engines rounds pass over 3000 rpm, then it accelerates normally.
In the garage told me that might be a problematic sparking plug. What your opinion about this?
My car is a 2003 1400, 16v megane. Petrol

6 months ago, i had the same problem..

i went to Renault they told me "the spark plugs are the problem; they are not generating enough spark"... so, i used new ones and the same problem still exists. others told me belts, battery, ect... :tem
anyhow, i've been through many attempts.. Finally, Renault, told me that i have to change some kind of a coil (circulated in the picture in white) which is directly over the spark plugs. you have 4 coils over 4 spark plugs.

so, Renault tested the 4 coils (how? taking each of the 4 coils upward a little bit like half way, if it vibrates well then its ok, if not, it needs to be replaced!). two of the coils were vibrating weakly, consequently, Renault told me to replace all of the 4 coils, because "if one is not working well, others will come along", "why" i asked, they told me, "lifetime of the coils" although my car is 04 1.6 60,000km only.

thanks god it works properly now.. :-)

Thanks a lot for your reply. I must tell you that the replaced coil is not original [it's a "Beru" (German) and not "Sagem" (the original French)]. Might that coil causes the problem? You replaced all coils with original (Sagem)? How much does this costs if so?
Sorry for my English :)

it's ok with your English.. :)
- yes, i replaced all the 4 coils with same original sagem ones in Renault. they cost me around € 350. :(

- non-original coils might be the reason, however, you should:

1) test the car battery, if it is working well or not.

2) check the spark plugs and see it they have some oil on the top that should be causing problems during ignition and acceleration.

3) ensure that the coils are well fitted.

4) also, which is very important, check for the Crankshaft sensor or Camshaft sensor. 1 and half year ago, my car stopped dead couple of times. it took me a while to make the engine start again. so, took it to Renault, where they cleaned up either the crankshaft or the camshaft i don't remember, sorry. anyhow u could clean both; they are cleaned with an air blower. this worked fine with me.

hope it could work with u too.

There was a problem with a batch of coils fitted to early Meganes. I think the Beru coils are considered a better product by a lot of users but if you do a search on the forum I'm sure you will see how common a problem these coils can be.

I was using "Bosch" spark plugs (the ex owner put them). I changed them with original spark plugs and everything works fine
