funnily enough, the replace battery's message was believed to be a myth as no one had ever seen it before and now there are 2 cases in a week :?

Im guessing that you either have a fuse that has blown, or there is a problem with the onboard computer. Either way, 2005 car should be under warranty still so go to the dealer and fin out what it is!!!

I had the same issue, and it needed a replacement keycard. Think it's a bad connection inside the card.

Are you having any trouble locking / unlocking the doors with that key ?

Dirty contacts?
Another idea is to reset the card thoroughly by removing the battery and waiting long enough. I am just guessing...

I have wondered about this feature and cant see how it (the card) tells the car its battery is low, or is this message a time tagged message much like the change oil is, if you dont do the mileage within the specified period up it comes, if it is then it would make sense that renault would change battery and reset the message during service, I have had problems with bad battery connection on a brand new (2 weeks old) card and no message was displayed, managed to sort it with a rub with fine emery paper on the contacts and pushing the contacts up a bit, im also sure i have read somewhere someone suggesting you reset the message thing by having the message displayed and holding down the reset on the wiper stalk, iam unable to confirm this but it could be worth a punt. anyhoo good luck and im interested to hear of solutions that work...

i imagine the battery would cause the RFID chip a emit weaker signal as the cell has less energy.
kinda like how a torch goes dimmer as the batteries are dying. eventually a threshold is reached to display the message.

or i could be completely wrong.

I started getting the "Replace Card Battery" a month ago, with both cards, all the time (unless you manually set a different displaly, but it defaults back to "Replace Card Battery" shortly after).
The cards work fine. I got the dealer to replace both batteries, and the same message displays.
The dealer told me I needed 2 new cards (at $500 each, and $200 "up front" deposit on each thanks) as they had to import them from France.
I doubt the problem is the cards. It is hard to believe both would run flat on the same day (when I got the message I immediately changed to the spare, which is rarely used) and the message still displayed.
I suspect the problem is either in the computer or the sensor.
Does anyone have any experience with this? How long can you ignore this message before you suddenly find yourslf locked out or with a car that refuses to start?
Are there dealers/service departments that know how to deal with this problem, which seems quite common?

£170 per card (card and programming)

i had this message show, but the card also had trouble opening / locking doors, there was somthing broken inside and a new card sorted it out.

If both cards are still working for the central locking and immobiliser its more likely to be the card reader at fault.

i'd just leave it unless you can try another reader from someone.
