To FAP, or not to FAP??????????......

Postby cyclonebri1 » Mon Dec 03, 2007 6:07 pm

'scuse my ignorance, but although I get the impression that a non fap car is more desireable as a purchase than a fap car, but why??

Get the imp that it is something to do with oil reqm's and service intervals etc

Asking as daughter is looking at nearly new 130 dci

It's not just that service intervals are shorter (9000 as opposed to 12000), and require an expensive oil 5W30 ACEA C3 spec; FAP fitted cars have some very specific operating instructions.

See Here
https://www.renault.co.uk/Innovations.aspx?page=fap

If she's only pottering around on short journeys then I'd try and stay clear of FAP fitted engines.

WHY

Sorry Ian, but bloody why

Please excuse me for being a total arse and not reading the links, which I will do shortly, but why would reault produce similar pwered cars that are either fap or non fap???
Edit
Well having read the links I still can't think of a good reason for renault offering both types for sale in the UK. I was aware of the oil issue and service intervals but I didnt know it was to do with the regeneration thing.
The question is however still why, why o why, would they introduce such grest confusion for so little return? There have been some very wierd posts on here where dealers and service depts dont even know which type the have sold or are working on.

Ah well, thats the added interest you get from owning a Renault.

With the requirement of the Euro IV emission legislation the 1.9dCi was initially produced FAP fitted as I believe this was the only way it could acheive the Euro IV standard when fitted to certain models in the Renault range. However this caused a number of problems with cars that were driven in "urban conditions" as the Renault system relies on the car being driven at a constant speed to allow the exhaust temperature to get high enough to allow regeneration of the FAP to take place.
Other manufacturers (Citroen/Peugeot) use a chemical additive that is injected into the fuel system that raises the temperature of the exhaust gases allowing regeneration to happen.

Renault obviously tweeked the ECU and some 1.9dCi's are now none FAP fitted depending on their application. Like wise the 1.5dCi's and 2.0dCi's also can be FAP fitted depending on country and application.

The other thing is that FAP fitted cars produce very low emissions so are supposedly much better for the enviroment!

Once the new Euro V standard comes in, in 2009 all Diesels will be FAP fitted.

the reason they make both fap and non-fap is because a fap car can have problems if its driven in the city. I was looking at a leon previously and they've had problems with their fap. in the manual it basically tells you to use it for motorway driving. fap is obviously the new technology and the car manufactures must be shown to have cleaner cars hence why they make them with fap. but from what I've read you should stay away from fab unless you do most of your driving on motorways.

Exactly my point, what car doesn't get city driven at least part of the time, So why make 2?

The FAP equipt car appears to be only a viable option in an ideal world of empty motorways from every A to B. They dont exist so why do FAP cars?

Yes I do understand, but I don't understand, :D :-(

No disrespect to anyone who's answered here by the way,

by being driven in the city i mean its usually driven in the city. Basically if you spend most of your time driving slowly or stuck in traffic a FAP car is not for you. If they didnt make cars without fab they would lose custom and heighlight to people that theres a problem with this new technology.

I have a 130 DCi sportshatch with FAP....6speed manual.

Its a January 2006, 55 reg, i didnt actually make a particular point of getting an FAP model, came about by chance really. Though the dealer did ask me what kind of mileage i do, currently its around 35K a year.......virtually all motorway miles commuting.

Servicing every 9K is a pain!.......seems to come round very quick when your doing 600 miles a week......something to bear in mind when i get my serviced at Renault.

i also believe FAP cars are cheaper for businesses or something or other. Audi sell their diesel cars standard or with "TDV" with is basically FAP i'm told.

The reason for particle filters is purely down to Euro IV emmission standards.

Depending on the engine application and installation will depend on whether it can meet the Euro IV emission standards

That's it!

Just wait for the new Euro V standards, then we are in for fun!

There's a link to Renaults website in my first post that explains it all

(It's a Diesel exhaust particle filter)
