Dephaser and coil packs - replacements any better?
My 2005/55 1.6 with 18k has already had the dephaser pulley replaced but not the coil packs (yet - surely just a matter of time!)
Question is, does anyone know if the replacements are any better? My dephaser lasted 12k, so can I expect a similar life out of the newer one? Ditto the coils when they inevitably pack in.
Also, when the dephaser is changed, do Renault change the cambelt? If so does this count towards the mileage before they belt is changed again, i.e offset by the mileage already on the car? Just curious as I will hit 50k in the car in less than 18 months

Yes is the answer to both according to my local dealer... I recently had my dephaser replaced, and it was 10k miles short from my cambelt change so asked... And they said there was a mandate from renault instructs them to change cambelt when and if dephaser is changed... Mine was in again yesterday though, for a injection computer reset, when i asked why this was needed, i was told it should have been done after dephaser as standard....

I just had the depahser replaced and the mechanice told me that the new ones have been modified and are wider and hence will not have the same problems.
I will not be happy if it goes again in 12,000 miles as it cost me £700 for this. He also said in such instances there's a chance your water pump could need replacing. Mine didn't luckily.
Are the coils and dephaser connected? One coil went at exactly the same time as the dephaser. It still juts a little at start-up, and lacks a bit of its old power, is this normal or is it the kind of part that requires time to be driven in?

I don't think they're linked by anything other than the fact they don't last more than 10k miles.
I asked the question about the dephasers to our local Renault garage the last time I was in and the technical 'expert' became very evasive about how many failed units were themselves replacements, so I'm guessing the newer ones aren't much better!

If this announcement by Valeo is anything to go by, the new replacement coil packs from 2007 on' should last twice as long as the old ones... Provided of course you do get the new '245104' reference and not one of the old stock.
