CD changer

Postby Don » Wed May 09, 2007 9:56 am

What is the best way to install a CD changer in a Sports Touring? I have the single CD head unit, where should the multichanger go and is one limited to a unit from renault if you want the fingertip controls to work?

Thanks!

These days there are products on the market that pretend to the radio to be a CD Changer, but actually transform the control messages so they can control an iPod. If that sounds interesting, then search this forum for Connects2 and Dension.

If you want to keep the standard Tuner List or Update List head unit then you need a VDO CD Changer, and make sure it's 'digital'. this means the output is S/PDIF rather than stereo analogue. There are a couple of changers you can find googling ICE etailers or ebay etc. VDO do have one that supposedly can read MP3s off of CDs, which is a nice idea. As far as location, I think it's possible to go under a front seat (as they're usually 6 CD). Otherwise I guess you could get a cable into the load bay and secure it to the back of a rear seat.

You can get converters to use the stalk and/or display with after-market head units, but I don't really know details on those. Then add on a compatible CD Changer of your choice...

Personally I stopped using a CD Changer a couple of years ago (with a change of car) and got an iPod, which is now working in my Megane - it's less physical space and easier to update the (larger selection) of albums/songs, not requiring me to rummage through my CDs every week or two.

Cheers Gav, I hadn't even thought of the iPod route but will look into it, much better solution, cheers!
