Hi
I have a 2005 1.9 DCI Convertible that has served me well (162k miles - Original turbo, clutch, gearbox etc) but i noticed a tapping (more than normal) last week. Since then i have used another car and only run the car at idle to hear the noise. The noise sounds like video 1.
On idle from cold the other day it made the screech noise just as in this video 2 but only for around 5 seconds. Would anyone happen to know what either noise could be?
The videos arent of my car but are the same noise.

Any advice much appreciated. Shes done me well but i would of liked one last summer driving her.

Hi,
from what l heard the cam is gone and the second one sounds like a piston gone.
l wouldn't bank on driving it far this summer or any summer unless you buy a new engine.
As you said, it's served you well.
Good luck
Bob.

Thanks for the reply. When you say the cam has gone do you mean the camshaft?
Also when you piston gone do you mean sticky or broken? I have taken it for a drive and performance is just as it always has been.
It starts up as normal and is quiet for around 10 seconds before the tapping / ticking noise is noticeable. My thinking is possibly the top part of the engine has been starved of oil but i guess until i take it to bits i wont know exactly.

Hi,
l think you need an experienced mechanic to look and listen to your engine.
The you tube videos sound like l said, camshaft noise and faulty piston noise, but that's only my opinion.
This may not be the case with yours if the noise isn't constant.
You also need to see if there are any fault codes.
We tend to assume the worst very often, but sometimes, it's not as bad as we think.
Good luck
