Possible dumb question, but here it is...
How do I know if I have a DPF - car is Megane 1.9 dci on a 53 plate
The toxic fume (engine shaped) light has come on

A '53' plate does not have a DPF so it's something else.

Possibly related to the check injection message that came on a few weeks ago. Both lights have now gone out.

Ok, the engine light has come back on again (toxic fume)
Any clues as to what to check before I go and pay stupid money for a garage to have a look

Buy a cheap Bluetooth OBDII reader and download TorquePro app (or similar) on your phone - around £10 for both. Use this to see what error codes are being shown and google the results.

Could be anything but mine was the EGR valve gunged up and stuck, as reported by OBDII. Cleaned it up and no errors for last 2 years.

For the time it takes I would take it off and give the erg valve clean, I don't think the cleaner would get threw all the oil and soot to clean it properly

I had my dpf removed after it would not regen and the engine remapped, had its first mot since it was removed yesterday and no problems with the mot

You need to take the EGR valve off to check it anyway as it may not be too bad. If it is then it would need to be removed to clean it properly - search the forum for instructions as many have done it before. Main thing is to separate the solenoid from the mechanical valve itself so the latter can be given a good soak without risking getting the solenoid part too wet.

If it is gunked up check the inlet manifold to make sure the holes which match the egr valve holes are clear too. Mine were blocked.

Sounds like a job for the weekend. Funnily enough, the light has gone off again
Think I will check it all anyway (after I search for the "how to" guide)
