Hello,
This is my first post so please excuse me if I don't put enough information in!!
I have a 1.9dci privilege estate and have been told recently my fan belt is cracked. The belt itself is reasonably cheap and I just wondered if anyone has replaced the belt themselves and if so if its very easy? If not anyone know how much they are roughly to have done as the garages I have contacted have said they'll have to get it in and have a look first.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Elliot

Re: Fan belt replacement
It's easy to do with a basic tool kit but there is a lot of coverings to remove before you get to it through the front off side wheel arch.

my fan belt is cracked
Your car doesn't actually have a fan belt. The last car I owned with a fan belt was my beloved Ford Capri 2.0 Ghia (1979 - T Reg). So it is either the timing belt (also called a cambelt) or the accessories belt.
The timing belt kit is probably £100 and best left to a good mechanic and the accessories belt more like £15-£20.
If it is the timing belt that's cracked then it is wise to replace the water pump and accessories belt at the same time. All in you're probably looking at £300 - £350 for a good independent garage to do the job. Double that for a Renault dealership.
The belts should be replaced every 5 years or 72k miles.

Here's a link to the manual, see Section 11A.

Re: Fan belt replacement
Most people say "fan belt" when they mean accessory/auxiliary belt
Re: Fan belt replacement
Yes sorry I should have said, it's the accessories belt just use to calling it the fan belt. I have had the Cambelt done about 12000 miles ago. Now there is cracking in the accessories belt so need that replacing, I have found the belt fairly cheap to buy I just wondered if anyone has changed there own belt or whether its a garage job.
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Fan belt replacement
It is easy to do yourself, you have to take a lot off before you can get to it though.
Front off side wheel needs to come off, then wheel arch liner, then there is a removable panel with 4 13mm bolts.
With all those removed you can see the belt, it has a self tensioner that needs to be manually moved in order to remove the belt.
Its a fiddly job but easy to do.
