Snapped spring

Postby meganecb » Wed May 08, 2013 2:14 pm

This could be down to the state of the roads in this country. However, i recently had the top ring of the suspension spring snap or shear off.
The garage said it could be down to a fracture that over time water has got into and has caused the sping to break. Just wondering if anyone else has had the problem.

Yes, it's corrosion causing the initial crack and leading to a failure.

cheers alex, i understand the spring is made by kyb, i am considering getting uprated springs to improve the handling and look of the car, do you think they will be made of a better quality material?

Changing stiffness of the springs together with the geometry of the suspension without proper testing and adjusting many other things, such as roll bars, dampers toe-in and camber is not a good idea. Your car will become slower and will look modified. Use the replacement springs similar to the original.

Tuning the suspension is not easy and requires a lot of testing on a track. It might be cheaper to buy an RS than to modify your car. You can achieve better results by just renewing parts, getting Conti tyres, GreenStuff pads, DOT5.1 brake fluid, braided teflon brake hoses and ester-based gearbox oil. These do not require testing and are guaranteed to improve the feel and performance.

Thanks once again, too be honest it handles well anyway as the gt suspension is 10mm lower than the standard megane, just curious as to if the springs would be better quality. sounds as much hastle as i thought it would be to change. Would love an r.s megane one day as i loved my r.s clio.
