Replacing EPS Column 04 1.6vvt Megane

Postby Grizzly Bear » Thu Feb 07, 2013 9:55 am

Good morning,

I've searched left high and low for a step-by-step guide to replace the EPS column on an 04/54 plate, 1.6vvt Megane?

Unfortunately my sister in-laws has failed and she can't afford garage prices for the repair so I've volunteered to do the work if of course it's not a requirement to be a mechanical genius?

I would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction or give me some advice on the procedure or anything to look out for?

Thanks in advance.

Rich

Start with the manual in the sticky thread having the work MANUALS in the subject line.

The sticky hasn't got what i'm looking for, I need a replacement guide or just some helpful advice. Is there anything I should be looking out for? I heard that the EPS has an ECU which needs to be removed from the old unit and attached to the new one?

Aha, I didn't see that so thank you very much. I went round tonight after work to get started, I didn't have much time before it got dark but I managed to strip everything down, all I need to do now is remove the EPS itself. That manual you've linked me to has saved me a hell of a lot of time though, I won't have to figure it all out for myself any more :). One last thing, it say's about disabling the air-bag computer with a diagnostics tool. I don't have one so shall expect the air-bag light when I put it all back together and re-connect the battery? It's something I never really though about, when I replaced the steering wheel on my old Astra it wasn't a problem at all.

Well, it is all about probabilities. Airbags are designed to not explode if a connector fails or a wire breaks. Still, the recommended way is to use the computer. People often disconnect the battery, wait for half an hour and then proceed while keeping their bodies away from the dangerous area... I am not sure about legal (or insurance) implications of any work on airbag circuits in the UK. In any case, read first and then decide.
