Window Problem

Hi,
A common problem I understand. The electric drivers window has become unreliable, sometimes won't come down and the (worsed of all) won't go back up.
I've heard it can be the wiring loom or the regulator. If its the loom Renault pay for the part and I pay £80-£120 labour. If its the regulator I can get it done at my local garage (don't need a dealer for that)
How can I tell which fault it is? When I press the swith there is no responce and I can't hear a motor running. The speaker in that door also doesn't work any more (might be a coincidence). Renault say the only way for them to tell me is to take the door card off and look for which they will charge me £54. That's a lot just to confirm what the problem is and then I still have to pay for the reapir.

You are describing an intermittent fault of the window regulator. It is caused by corrosion and/or overheating a single pin inside the regulator connector. Just flip open the opening part of the door card, pull off the connector, clean the contacts, apply some silver conducting paint to the dirty pin and everything will work again. I had this on two different doors at different times... The repair takes about half an hour and requires no special tools/parts/skills. A garage will replace the whole regulator and possibly the harness at your expense.

It is strange that the speaker has failed in the same time. It can be a coincidence, because the window fault is intermittent. Both can be affected by water ingress if the drains at the bottom of the door are blocked. Did you have any problems with water coming through or splashing inside this door? Both, by the way, share the same door connector, which must be checked as well.

Thanks for the reply, all sounds very comprehensive. How easy will it be to get the door card off? I've looked on youtube and you remove the bottom first and then flip up the top. I'm a bit nervous about all the plastic clips, it would be really easy to break a part (possibly). The car is not garaged and the plastic might be a bit cold. Re the water problem, I dont think water has ever got in other than it is outside all the time, could be rainwater ingress on the window top seal or just condensation.

Hi. There is no upper seal, water is supposed to run inside the door and escape at the bottom...
Regarding opening the card. Yes, you unclip it after removing a few screws and lift up. Read the manual in the sticky thread. The trouble is that you don't want to remove the entire mechanism, and therefore you will be fiddling with the parts while having limited access to them. The plastic seems to be robust enough to withstand abuse. The second time it took half an hour for me to do the job.

Hi Alex,

Been looking at the downloads as you suggested as to how to remove the door card. I've found number 0850C but it doesn't explain in detail regarding how to flip up the door top panel. Is it simply putting some levers under the flap where it joins the bottom panel or is there a better dowload?

Good luck. Its not fun in this weather...

I've mentioned a silver conducting paint. It helps to restore circuits and corroded contacts - highly recommended.
