Changing Brake Fluid

Postby burton » Tue May 22, 2012 11:32 am

Right whilst I am doing the rear brakes thought it would be a good time to change the brake fluid also, as I am not sure when this was last done.

Any special things I need to know about when changing? What brand is best to use?

Just bleed the brakes a bit more than usual. Keep bleeding and topping up until the bled fluid becomes lighter. Don't let air in the system. You will need about 0.7L, buy 1L just in case.

Buy any DOT4 fluid of a known brand. DOT5.1 is compatible and supposed to be better. Under no conditions use DOT5 - it is completely different!

Thanks for the replies went for some ATE stuff... Which I had in the M5.... Now the thought of changing the fuel filter at the same time comes to mind!

I also take it that you don't need anything fancy to the fluid change or anything reset? Also what is the capacity of the brake fluid need to change fully?
