Hi all...just bought my first renault(megane 1.5 dci 80 2008 dynamique 29k on clock) and upto now have been impressed with the drive and fuel performance but there are a couple of things that are niggling me
1.Its my first diesel and although i know the engines have a distinctive "knocking"sound,it also sounds very "tappety"?
2.When i change down to first or second and am idling,it seems to almost want to accelerate without my foot on the pedal.
maybe just me with it being my first diesel but any advice would be helpfull

Re: Is it me??
If you have traction control fitted suggest you turn it off and see if that makes a difference, the control is on the lower side right hand of the dash if fitted.
Re: Is it me??
Do you mean when you bring the clutch pedal up it accelrates away because this will happen in a diesel if you used to petrols it might feel abit weird ?

on modern diesel engines its normal, its very noticeable when you change from 1st to 2nd gear, the engine keeps away from the stall zone. personally i think its good for people that have some lack of sensibility on the foot to keep the car out of the stall zone while shifting, and you dont have to worry about this, just get use to it
about the sound dont worry too much, as far as ive eard there are several engine sounds on the same 1.5dci and none of them is malfunctioning. injectors, tappets, oil quality, there are a few factors that contribute to the sound but if the engine is not consuming oil and not producing a hard tappet sound there is nothing to worry about.

Re: Is it me??
Stevie,
The sound, if it truly is abnormal rather than you not being used to a diesel, can be caused by a poor quality oil. Get Mobil 1 0w40 from Costco, it is only £30 there. The tappet adjusters seize when oil saturated with soot goes through them. This sound can also be caused by a problem injector. Use Comma Detox for diesels on a long run, it will condition the engine. Renault diesels are not supposed to sound "tappety".
It is also possible that the ECU "thinks" that the engine is cold and switches off the multiple injection mode. Check the sensor readings by using OBD (ELM327 Pc interface is £20 on ebay).
The question regarding driving at the idle revs. It is a feature that can be used as a hill start: partially release the clutch, release the brake, move the right foot on the accelerator, then proceed as usual. This does not work in VW-s, which is annoying... This feature also helps to creep in slow traffic while reducing clutch wear.
