Strange occurance of tape!

Postby ChrisM » Mon Jul 18, 2011 3:20 pm

On Saturday I pulled a length of red tape akin to carpet tape around 4cm long and 1.5cm wide out of my roof joint, the one on the passenger side above the rear seat, it was kind of just peeping out of the joint so I pulled it out, came out with no resistance just wondered where it came from and more importantly what it was protecting, not opened roof since sometihng to do with torrential RAIN!
Anyone any ideas? :conf

Been tracking down a couple of water leaks in the roof which I appear to have now fixed, to help me find them a couple of weeks ago I removed all of the plastic trim attached to the inside of the roof and have yet to replace them.
Just gone down and had a look at the inside of the exposed roof and there is red (textured) tape wrapped around the two cables that go forward to operate the roof locking mechanism right by the rear roof joint on the passengers side.
Right next to the tape is a zip tie that secures the cables to the roof structure.
My car is a o4 plate and I estimate the tape width to be around 10mm, length obviously unknown, there is no tape on the drivers side rear joint or for that matter anywhere else on the roof structure.
I wonder if it's for identification purposes as it seems to have no other purpose.

AH Ha! wrapped around the cables eh! perhaps a look might be benaficial me thinks wouldnt want it to rub away at the cables sheaths now would I, especially now someone has pointed out where tihs tape has come from, oh yes mine is 04 as well.
How did you get the plastic trims off in this area, do you just tug away at em or is there more than just brute force and ignorance to this!!
Will be cursing in a few months when my roof decided it is not working because it has chewed a cable in the hindge basically because some idiot didn't bother to go and have a look when someone had kindly pointed out where this tape came from.
looks like it is car day on Saturday (tatton Park Flower show Sunday so it must be working by then), have an EGR valve to clean out as it has put my engine management light and service light on last night at 70mph, and kept it on till this morning when it didn't bother to come on, had it code read whilst I fixed a PC at out Llandudno dealership and they tell me it is EGR sensor complaining, whip him and wash him was the verdict!
I have a leak on my Driver window only when car is in motion, it seems it is not high enough, I found one torx bolt at the base of the door so wound it up to lift the glass, could not find the other job done I thought, Not likely all I did was move the drip from my leg to my upper arm
:-(
1 /10 for a pityfull effort!

You gotta remove the one that goes across the front of the cars roof first, ie the one parallel with the one the sun visors are mounted on. Renault say manually unlock the roof and move it up slightly first.
I just opened the roof slightly and with the engine still running carefully pulled it downward whilst also trying to support the roof as best I could so as not to put undue force on the opening mechanism.
Then close the roof and it's just a matter of working your way back with the other panels in a fairly similar fashion.
I haven't really spent any time trying to work out what the tape does but I don't think it would cause any problems without it.
As I said the tape might be some sort of identification or to hold the two cables together relative to one another during initial assembly or something similar.
If I get a chance tomorrow I will take a closer look.

BTW I think one of the window height adjuster screws is not as readily visible as the other, I think it might be offset a little from the hole in the door, not speaking from experience though but seem to remember reading it somewhere.

popped roof of it last night to go home, so I stopped it half way and went and had a look down the "tube" where these cables go, it looks like both cables are fairly tight towards the outer edge of the roof, so i supose they would not get caught up but best take a better look I supose.

Will take another look under the door again see if I can spot it, tends to rain a lot in Wales so could well be benifical to me to seal it before my arm goes all soggy!
