Electrical problems

Postby IcyTexx » Mon Jun 20, 2011 10:01 pm

Hi!

Here's me with my first problem.
Today I installed a new stereo, the old one was custom too. The headunit fitted perfectly, and I just plugged in the ISO converter to Pioneer radio adapter, put everything in an it works great. While doing this I disconnected the negative wire from the battery.
As I was driving at night, in one moment all electrics just shut off, the whole car was dark for a second and then it came back to life. I'm lucky the steering wheel didn't lock up. I started driving very slowly, and it happened again. Everything went dark. After a few seconds the car came back to life, with all of the warning lights on. This started happening after 3 hours of driving. I stopped and decided not to move. The car starts normally when there's electricity. So the battery isn't drained. I opened the hood and tapped the cover (couldn't open it because of the screws) of the battery. The cabin lights came to life and went out as I tapped. But I couldn't move the wires from the battery poles, it seems they're fastened right. I noticed that servo started to work better than usually as this started happening. The headlights died and they don't turn on in any condition.

My question is... Could I have caused a short circuit with the stereo wiring (I doubt it would cause problems 5 hours later)? Or is it just a battery contact problem? I know this seems like a simple fix problem and you don't have a crystal ball to diagnose what's wrong with the car, but I'm asking if I may done something wrong with the stereo wiring to cause such drastic problems? The car is a couple of miles from me and I'll be returning to it in the morning.

I think contact problem, maybe put some grease, vasoline on the battery terminals and reconnect the wires to them... Also are the terminals clean??

Hope that helps

I hope it's a contact problem. I'm really afraid of that happening again, because the wheel locks up. I travel on a road with a lot of nasty corners over the hill and that click the lock makes may be the last sound I'll hear before plummeting over the road edge into a huge fall.
