Brake squeal

Postby beer goggles » Wed Feb 18, 2009 6:30 pm

I have a 2005 megane, i drive for 500 yards or so and stop. For the next 500 yards without applying them, my brakes squeal so loud and can only be compared to a giant sparrow trying to wake the dead. :( It stops after a while but it`s beginning to affect my fillings and others around me. Is this serious or is there a quick fix? I have only had the car 3 months and i bought it from an old girl in Brighton. Any help would save me a trip to the dentist thanks :o

i imagine they were checked.

you probably have an excess dust build up. take them to a garage and get them cleaned. someone paid ~£30 for a brake clean and i think it solved the problem. it has on mine.

alternatively, get different pads and have the mechanic apply a liberal amount of copper slip to the back of it when installing.

Hi,

My 13mths old 1.6A tourer (Model K.84) as the renault svs ctr (in Singapore) stated these info in my 30k service checklist early this month:
Front Brake pads (min 3mm) - measured 8.8mm+-
Rear Brake pads/shoes (min 3mm) - measured 7.7mm+-

Front Brake disc (min 21.8mm) - measured 23.4mm+- (left 1.6mm)
Rear Brake disc (min 6.5mm) - measured 8.2mm+- (left 1.7mm)

Note sure if we really need to meet that min spec before we need to replace the pads or even disc.
I was told that at 60K, the brake disc will need to be replaced. Also that 1.6mm/1.7mm brake disc tolerance should be sufficient to last another 30k; not sure if we can take their word for it? I always try to brake gentlely.

=> The car brakes to a stop with a "grinding" sound now & then after 30k svs. Formerly it always "grinds" to a complete stop; even when you release pressure at the last moment so that the car brakes and stop gentlely. is this normal on a renault?

The svs folks always claimed that this is a "feature" of all Renaults as the material used caused it to react this way (grinding sound when coming to a complete stop). I have tried putting it to neutral just before to coming to a stop, there is no sound at all. Seems like the engine is still putting pressure to the brakes and not cutting out power to the wheels and the brakes just "grind" to overcome the power from engine.

Any chances is there a issue that need to be fixed?
Thanks,
aLanLoH

Hi,

If there is "grinding", then it is likely that the discs are corroded or somehow else damaged. They cannot be re-surfaced, so just replace them and install the EBC GreenStuff pads, composed with Kevlar fiber. The mechanism of brakes must be checked for sticking and the brake fluid renewed. You will not recognise your car after that -- so good the braking will be. Megane's brakes are excellent... in the good hands.

Thanks all, It turns out that the discs were quite badly scored but only on the outside edge. Enough to make them damage the pads. I took the car to the garage that my firm uses to service the company cars. Had the discs and pads changed, copper grease applied and all for £120. Now the car stops silently on a 5 pence piece :grin

Oh yah? Changing the disc and pads works? Does the sound come back after 1-2 weeks?

I had braking grinding (sound like when you pronouce as "cruded" sound) since day1 for every complete stop until my last 30k svs. Then now the sound seems only occasionally. Do you know how much mileage usually the orig disc/rotor & pads last? Is there a need to replace disc/rotor by 60k or until the min tolerance thickness?
Seems like the wear & tear is very high for mine at 30k. Is this normal? I am not a heavy braker to begin with.

Btw, it seems always to give "clock-clock" sound when braking and cornering into a carpark. Copper grease used but sound just come back after 1-2weeks.
Like to check if it is normal when we bring the car to a complete stop; then you step the brakes even further; you will hear another (at stationary) a "clock-clock-clock-clock" sound. The dealer claim these are normal, brake free-play sound. Last time only gets it when the car is on a down-hill slope. These days can simulate them when on flat roads too. Really wanna get rid if these sounds.

From the EBC .pdf, found these:
Megane Front Rear
1.6 2005- DP1958 DP21958 DP680 DP2680

Pads:
1958: 156 x 67 x 18mm & 155 x 69 x 18mm - - measured 8.8mm+-
680: 87 x 53 x 15mm - measured 7.7mm+-

Disc/Rotor:
1.6 2002- D982 GD982 USR982 V 4 280 44 24 / 22
D1298 S 4 240 81 8 / 7

I can see that the brake disc are being eaten up on the center portions by the pads, "T" shape by now. I can go take a photo can show next time.
So you are recommending to replace the disc (rotor they called it?) using original renault's and to use "EBC GreenStuff pads"?
Is the original pads from renault not as good as EBC as they tend to eat up the disc?

Are these the ones you referring to? Can my 1.6A Tourer use 6000 series as it give lesser dust? I am not use if I can buy them in Singapore as yet?
- Greenstuff - 2000 Series - Premium Street Pad
- Greenstuff - 6000 Series - 4x4 (SUV and Light Truck) Pad

Are those listed above the correct part number that I need to ask when buying?
Thanks,
aL=:)
