Wiper problem!!

Hi,
The 2 speed wipers are fine but the intermitant does not work, it only works once when i 1st put them on or once when i role the timer stalk with the numbers 1-4 wrote on.

It its been back to the garage i bought it from (not renault)) they have replaced the stalk, wiper motor and had a auto elecy and it is still the same!

Does anyone have any ideas its a 03 Megane 1.9DCI....Cheers Drew

Hi Drew,

I am confused with your message. There is no intermittent mode in Megane II, only the automatic one. The droplets drawn on the stalk indicate the sensitivity of the rain sensor. To activate this mode switch the wipers off, then start the car, then move the stalk one click down. After this pour a bucket of water over the sensor (next to the mirror on the windscreen). The wipers should start working. Otherwise, there is a fault with the sensor. The sensor is located behind the mirror and can be replaced. It is also used to control the lights in the automatic mode. Does the auto-lights function work?

Sensor sensitivity can be also affected by Rain-X and similar products applied to the windscreen.

"ahh" thanks Alex thats interesting! he said mine was not equiped with auto-wipers? and yes the auto lights do work, would it make any difference if i have de-activated the auto-lights?

Im not sure if its had a new screen, i have only had the car for 3 weeks

No they have never worked in the 3 weeks i have had the car.

No, deactivation of auto-lights has no effect on wipers.

Onlydiesels raised a valid question. If they changed the windscreen, then the sensor could have been damaged. Usually a new sensor is installed with a new windsceen.

Drew, in your first mesage you wrote "it only works once when i 1st put them on", which is a correct behaviour of the auto-function on dry screen. The following "or once when i role the timer stalk with the numbers 1-4 wrote on" does not happen in my car.

Again, the problem may be caused by Rain-X. Clean the sensor area and test it with a bucket of water to be sure.

I tested it earlier with a bucket of water on every setting 1 to 4 and nothing

Any movement on the roller gives 1 wipe on mine (strange)

Im starting to think it's the sensor but.... the guy at the garage confused me by saying it has no sensor because it does not have auto-wipers altho he tryed a sensor out of another megane and said it made no difference?

Can the sensor be purchased seperatly? or am i going to have to smash the screen ha ha!

Just read the manual (see my message in the links section). Turns out there existed an option of non-automatic wipers... Sorry for desinformation.

The mechanic tried another sensor? Sensors can be removed and reinstalled, but every time the base plate must be replaced with a new one. These sensors are very sensitive to dirt/dust/fingerprints.

It is the same sensor for the lights and wipers.

parts man at reno manchester tells me that when you buy the sensor,you get a pad that sticks to screen between sensor+glass,i think he said kit is about £75 also says you can`t buy pad on it`s own ( is that any surprise??),now then,if it has had a screen,chances are that this pad is missing, (especially if it`s been done by an independant who is`nt in the know) but what difference this makes,i don`t know,but reno tell me that this pad is needed.
think they all had auto wipers till very recently so yours should`nt be any different,but if you remove the cowling around the rear view mirror (clips together ie 2 halves,you will see the sensor + wiring clipped to screen.
although it could be that the sensor was damaged if/when it had a screen,but either way,wether it be sensor u/s or pad missing, your looking at a new kit. if you can get to the sensor on your car,put wipers on auto setting,gently pull sensor away from the screen (whilst still clipped on) and the auto wipers should work,albeit erratric.

Im going to have a proper look this weekend in daylight but tbh i dont think there will be a sensor there at all,. sounds like its been removed at some point for whatever reason.
