replacing the clutch pedal

Postby stoutard » Tue Apr 15, 2014 5:30 pm

Hi All,

I'm looking for a bit of help as the clutch pedal on our Megane 2005 cc keeps falling apart (the return spring pops out and the clutch hangs on the bite point, or the whole thing which is held in place by a cable tie come apart and the pedal drops to the floor).

Im looking for advice on how easy it is to replace it, i'm pretty handy and have access to a workshop.

thank for any advice

Simon

Nothing is impossible... Please have a look in the factory repair manual first. It is in the sticky thread above this one.

Another question is what causes such a failure. I'm suspecting it may be caused by the master cylinder. When did you change the brake fluid the last time? Was it of the right spec (generic DOT 4 is not enough)? Is there a mat getting under the clutch pedal? Do you always press it to the floor?

Hi Alex,

It appears to be purely related to the pedal design, another recurring problem is a spring (not fixed but relying on its own pressure, that keeps falling out and this then keeps the pedal on the bite point, very annoying. I heard from a garage that he regularly fixes a clutch with this issue on a regular megane.

The pedal does occasionally catch on a mat but this is not the cause was we have removed to check.

I'll have a look at the manual.

cheers for the help,

simon

I've mentioned the mat and the fluid because they may cause the master cylinder sticking, which may cause the spring to fall out. I don't know... The pedal is very simple and might be possible to fix for free or replace it with a second-hand part. Out of curiosity, was the fluid changed every second year?

the whole clutch was replaced Aug/Sep last year inc both cylinders.

In fact i was driving today and the cable tie holding the clutch pedal to the mechanism snapped and the clutch pedal fell to the floor again, very frustrating but I carry spare cable ties so a bit of crawling around and I repaired by the roadside.

I'll take some pictures and add them

happy easter

Cable ties? Sorry, you've lost me. Please don't drive with the controls attached with cable ties, chewing gum, etc.

I'm suspecting that the cause is the master cylinder seizing, which causes play and the spring/rod falling out. If the problem is caused by not changing the brake fluid or something related, then the next will be the brake and hospital (if you are lucky).
