Window Problem with a difference?

Postby gemlouise01 » Wed Apr 10, 2013 11:30 am

Hi All,

I am new to the site after having purchased a 56 plate renault megane 1.6 vvt petrol back in January.
Has run like a dream since I got it, but it was a massive upgrade from my very old Corsa, (apart from the adventures encountered when the indicator & headlight bulb needed replacing).
Last night we drove to a friends house for dinner, parked up, no problems. On returning to our car 4-5 hours later we opened the door to the most horrendous akrid burning electrical smell I've ever experienced from a car, really got me at the back of the throat. There was no smoke though, and we quickly attempted to put the windows down to get rid of the choking smell. This is when we discovered that the front passenger side window would not go down. It was still all the way up, from how we left it, but it wouldnt budge with the switch on that side or the drivers side. The smell didn't go away for the whole of the drive home, and seemed to come and go in waves. Unfortunately it was late and I couldnt inspect it any further in the dark so left it overnight.
When we had a look the next morning, the problem was still there, and so was the smell. I checked the fuse for that window and it had blown and thats as far as I have got as I dont know much about electrics and wanted to consult a forum/ my haynes manual before I started tearing the door apart.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, and apologies if someone has already mentioned a problem like this but I couldnt find anything listed. Probably blind with worry lol :?

Thanks

Hi
Sounds as though it's the passenger window motor module there are a lot of complaints with them due to moisture getting in them,
it means taking the door panel off and having a look. I am in the process of doing mine - similar problem without the smell.
if it is the module you can get it refurbished for about £30.00
regards

There any thread in the Problem area titled "Window Problem with a difference?" which sounds the same problem you are getting. If the fuse blew you probably had a lucky escape. Sounds like the window module has got water in it and has burnt out. Taking the door insides off is straight forward - takes me about 10 minutes now I've done it before. Search on you tube and there are a couple fo videos:

Your module may well be fried now so may be better to buy a 'mini cube' which is more waterproof anyway.

Just be careful there is nothing live - may be worth disconnecting your battery before you start.

renault do a warranty fix for this. You pay 24% they pay 76% through goodwill. Had my drivers window done. Cost me £99
