MOT failure rates revealed
Share on emailShare on twitterShare on favoritesMore Sharing Services One in five cars registered in 2008 failed its first MOT test, according to data released today.

Between October 2010 and September 2011, some 352,000 cars – around one in five – failed their MOT test when presented for the first time after being registered new.

Some 24.5 million MOT records from the Vehicle Operator and Services Agency (VOSA) were analysed by honestjohn.co.uk, which says that this is the first time such detailed information has been made available to the public.

French worst, Japanese best
MOT testers were most likely to ‘first-time’ fail cars from French brands. Renault, Citroen and Peugeot were all in the bottom five brands, with Mini and Chevrolet also performing poorly. The worst-performing family car of all was the Renault Megane, with only 71% of cars registered in 2008 passing their first MOT.

The best-performing mainstream brands for passing their first MOT test were mostly Japanese. In descending order, the best were Lexus, Suzuki, Honda, Saab and Toyota. The top family car was the Suzuki Splash with a 90% first pass rate.

The most common reasons for MOT failures were lighting and signalling (164,837 failures), tyres (96,760) and headlight aim (82,555).

Consumers can access the data to spot MOT failure rates by make, model, year of registration and postcode. The most common areas for failure are also listed.

Interesting. I haven't read the article so cannot comment in any detail. Basic MOT parameters are available free of charge from the government website. Frankly, anyone who doesn't perform their own 'pre-MOT' test should not be surprised by the results: high end cars get properly serviced, lower end cars do not - since the owners are either ignorant or cash strapped.

The MOT is not rocket science. A competent person can learn almost all of the tests in 1 hour. Another hour to do them.

Best advice for Megane owners: sell it before it bankrupts you!

If your car fails an MOT on blown bulbs or tyres, then you dont deserve to be on the road! These are things you can check before the MOT.

And if the Megane is worse offending (i.e. most have probably failed on lights due to lack of access) its not exactly the same as worn components or corrosion etc..... or am I missing the point?
