Hi all
i have an 03 megane privilige 1.6 auto. This morning whilst driving to work my service light came up with the lcd saying "Auto Wipers Failure". I cleared as much of the ice and snow from the car as i could before setting off, and for about 10-15 minutes they were working fine. Now im wondering if the snow or ice may be causing it to mess up, unlikely i know but figured id try again later when its melted off a bit.
Can anyone tell me where the sensor is so that i can check it? Also, has anyone had to replace / fix this before? If so how much did it cost?
Thanks
Ian

the sensor is fixed to the inside of the windscreen where the rear view mirror is attached. probably the cold weather causing it to malfunction.
I'd wait till the weather warms up and see if the problem goes away.

thanks for the reply.
I read a few other places that chemicals on the windscreen can cause it to mess up as well. Where my car hadnt moved for 2 days the snow had frozen pretty hard to the windscrween so had to use a fair bit of de-icer to lossen it so i could scrape it off. Maybe this has messed it up as well!
Am i right in thinking that the same sensor does the lights as well?

Yes, they are under the plastic cover, under the inside mirror.

I've had this before. Disconnecting the battery cleared the fault code. When I tested it afterwards, I started the engine on a dry day and put the wipers on auto. Then I covered the sensor with my hand on the outside of the windscreen to trigger the sensor (get ready to move your hand out of the way very quickly). Every time I did that, it would trigger one wipe. If you cover the sensor with the wipers off for a few seconds the headlights will come on (if set to auto) and then go off after uncovering.

Re: Auto Wiper Failure - Adive needed
I've had the message "Auto Wiper Fault" but not "Auto Wiper Failure"
This was the morning when it was -10 degrees, so I presume the sensor had frozen. After stopping at the petrol station, I restarted it and the message had gone (probably because the car had warmed up and the sensor had been warmed up).
Do the automatic lights still work? It's the same sensor - it sits behind the rear view mirror.
