Depends what kind of driver you are. At the end of the day doesn't matter what car you have you should be happy to take on anything. Plus you've got to consider that its not too hard to race in straight line - its the corners that seperate the men from the boys :grin Just because someone has a faster car doesn't mean they can drive. The 225 isnt a fast car - its too heavy for just 225 bhp.

However it does have good brakes and as long as you bin the Dunlop Sport Max tyres its a good handler (considering they were made especially for the megane they are horrendous, car washes out far too easily!)

If you want a safe chance id advise taking on newer cars. New cars are designed to be safe and smooth not fast, best they manage is to give you a fuzzy feeling lol-the world makes few drivers cars now :cry . Try the likes of the focus, leon, meganes even the impreza as the new ones have good power but flat torque curves compared to the old ones. Old school cars generally win. And dont take on anything like a cossie or an integrale as your likely to end up with your pants around your ancles my friend. Even the humble RS Turbo will point and laugh at a 225 (considering few are standard and they approx 400kg lighter! Fiesta RST approx 900kg). Also consider that vauxhalls legendary 'red top' graces most of the corsas and charva novas kicking around.

To illustrate - Ive got an escort RS2000 mk5 (150bhp) that i bought for 300 quid to use on the track and ive beaten allsorts. In a straight line it edges away from an RX-8 beats a 330 BMW comfortably and flies away from Type-Rs. (Standard car except for filter, exhaust and decat). And even tho its on cheap tyres and brakes that are very easy to boil even with dot5.1 competition fluid ive out handled/braked most ov them.

At the end of the day it down to how well you know your car and who is prepared to drive harder.

after having mine re maped i raced a e36 m3 evo off the lights and killed him up to 3rd gear. he started to catch me but by then it was over.

we slowed down for a camera to 40 and as we both pulled off i left him again, up to the end of 3rd then he slowly started to pass but not that quick.

also last week was on the back of a mits evo 7 he could not shake me off on a round about or cornors, and on a straight just could not make any distance. but i put it down to not being able to drive but he did make me look good.

meh drag racing gets a bit borin does it not,
although I'm happy to brag i made mincemeat out of an impreza RB5 away from a set of lights (in a new civic 1.8), but the guy was a clown and i caught him off boost between the lights. (staggered lights close together at anniesland cross for anyone who knows where i am)

most fun is on the windy back roads, if you know your car and where and when to push on a road you can give folk a surprise
a particular favourite was givin a boxster a fright in a baby blue scenic RX4 DCi :D

Always found renaults to be really nice cars to drive on winding roads even when its not a perfect surface. Can't wait to get my hands on mine, sick of the civic, too skittish unless its a smooth road.

I'd love to hear from anyone about the megane and its handling, any quirks or pleasantries etc

Would be close. had a VXR and it was more dramatic thats for sure but playing with one on a back road the other day. No match for the Megane.

guys im not yet an owner of a meganne 225 however i am in the market for one. this is my view as someone who has owned and tuned focus ST and octavia vRS, as well as driven friends focus RS mk2 and cupra stage 2+.

the stage 2 Meganne 225 isnt faster than a mk5 GTI when at stage 2+ in a straight line. I had an octavia vRS which was at stage 2+(same engine as the GTI) and is putting out around 280Hp/320IbFt, and from a rolling start in a straight line i have no issues staying with my friends Focus RS mk2 and pretty much most hot hatches at stage 2. incluiding St's and VXRs
As for a mk2 cupra you would never in a million years have a chance of keeping with one. a remap alone on the k04 TFSI engine gives 300Hp/320Ibft, add an exhaust and stage 2 remap, 320Hp/330Hp add a fuel pump on top and you'll be hitting 360Hp/360Ibft. There are plenty of guys on the gti/seat forums hitting sub 5 second 0-60 runs at santa pod on road tyres and std turbo.

As i said though i am however in the market for a meganne 225, for one reason alone. The way it drives. Im mega into my track days, and even with all the suspension mods on my vRS i wanted a more involving car. I test drove the meganne and i really wasn't impressed with the engine at all, it felt well and truly gutless. now im sure a remap and exhaust will help that out, but it isnt in the same league as the Vag TFSI in my opinion, however dynamically the car is very very good and well above the mk5 Vag chassis.

Once i get it, i will be fitting a hybrid turbo, decat, intake and intercooler to the car and mapping it to suit. it seems 300Hp is achievable which will give me in the region of what i want power wise, but with a better handling car to begin with. im just holding out until i find an R26 or a trophy
