It's extremely odd that the car behaves perfectly when at Renault. Odd enough for me to suggest that they know what the problem is and keep resetting the codes, or jumping the starter solenoid wire. Maybe I'm paranoid.
Have you had any fault codes appear? That would be a very basic and inexpensive first test. I keep reading this thread and thinking about it... Make sure that if they suspect the steering lock, whatever turns out to be actually wrong with it is actually fixed. I mean to say, if they replace a part and relieve you of £400 and it isn't fixed, don't pay. It is also wise to ask to see the old parts, just out of curiosity (and some degree of proof).

Re: non starter
Hello all
Just another update on my starting problems and it's good news! Following its first trip to Renault where they found no problems, the intermittent starting issues gradually got worse and it went to Renault again and they thought it required a new starter so this was done. I picked the car up on a Friday and all was well until the following Monday when it refused to start again. I had it recovered back to the dealer for another look and they said that the starter fuse had gone and it was ok again. I went to collect the car and having voiced my concern that what was blowing the fuse had not been identified I went to start the car and guess what,it refused to start outside their workshop! I grabbed back the courtesy car keys and told them to carry on looking!
The following day they found a bad earthing point on the gearbox and they re-wired it and touchwood, it's been fine for the last two weeks. Hopefully this is now cured my starting problem and the fact that it was a fairly easy, cheap fix is good news. I mentioned in earlier posts that I had been getting steering lock messages and had thought that this was the cause for my starting problems. I had been quoted £446 to have this replaced,I'm glad I didn't do this now!
My only gripe is with the dealer and that they did not find this earlier as the said that they had checked the wiring before.

It is the nature of the beast unfortunately.... Some things are not black and white. On the bright side, they didn't relieve you of £400+ (which they would have had to refund if it didn't fix it).
