After disconnecting and reconnecting the battery (to try and rest a stuck rear quarter window) I mistakenly put in the wrong code for the radio ONCE and I now have the dreaded ERROR word on the display instead of CODE.
Is there an easy way to clear this to bring back the word CODE to let me input it correctly this time ?

Disconnect and reconnect the battery after about 2 mins.

Ulrich is right. There is a security feature which increases the trial time between attempts each time you get it wrong. "ERROR" may go away if you are patient and don't fancy disconnecting the battery again.

Re: Radio "error" on display
I have learnt over the time that my megane is much like my computer. If i totally power it down for a couple of mins most electronic faults fix themselves.
