Gear knob

Postby dalefletcher111 » Sat Oct 17, 2009 8:56 pm

It seems everyones' got the same problem at the moment with their gear knob wearing away and not looking too good.
Mine is the same, but i have been watching ebay for a while (im not gonna pay the stealer) and all the 6 speeds i see have the reverse on the left, im yet to see one on the right :-( .

Im now considering painting the insert, so has anyone done this before? what is the best type of paint to use and/or stuff to protect it with?

Thanks
Dale

Paint it the colour of your car, or black.

Then put a couple of clear coats on it... This is what Renault failed to do...

I once saw a stencil on eBay for the gear lay out... i.e. paint it the colour of your car, lay on the stencil and paint it white, then add the clear coat.

or

It wouldn’t be that hard to knock up a gear lay out (on Photoshop) then print it to acetate and have it laser cut.. Could be then used as a stencil.

but

Would be a better than OEM job.

That's my plan anyway when my PHD work dies down.

Well, i used wet and dry to prepare the insert for spraying then lacquering today.

But, once I'd got it all down to the black plastic I liked the feel of the plastic so much ive put it back in as it is.
It feels like the same smooth plastic as that around the hood over the clocks and around the clock/display.

I suppose ill have to do something eventually otherwise the next owner (hopefully their wont be one) wont know where the gears are.

If anyone ever peels one off and scans it, send me the actual size image, and I'll draw it up on Autocad and make the file freely accessible for anyone who wants it laser cut. A dxf file with closed polylines is all that is required. Should be possible to knock them out in the hundreds on a sheet if they are nested correctly, for about 10p each.

I have done it in SolidWorks, I used micrometer as best I could to get the correct measurements. It’s an .iges file at present. I currently have my eyes out in uni to nab a few blank acetate sheets to print on, problem is I have no idea where to get them laser cut and that is the only way for a perfect finish.

Generally simple 3 axis laser cutting software uses 2D (you know this....!). I know a friendly man who could sort it (via some swift file tweaking). Anyone fancy one in 0.5mm stainless? I can organise a production run if there is interest, and of course, ulrich100 provides me with the file

Strictly not for profit - I'll get a price per unit and postage costs - can forward original invoices to you all if interested.

Thinking about it, aluminium would probably look better and be easier to apply.

Any types and sizes can be made on one sheet provided you have an accurate drawing (5 speed / 6 speed etc). They would just be nested to minimise material wastage.

The key to keeping the cost down is to cut a lot out of one sheet (probably a 1220 x 600mm) in one go which could probably make several hundred. The sheet would cost around £30 and cutting in the region of £50.

To make that worth while we would need at least 10 maybe 15 people to make it worth while.

Ill provide the file, it only is a 2D drawing. Just as an .iges as most will load this without problem.

I was looking at it last night the font of the numbers is close but i cant find one that is bang on...

I did something else last night :cry 'ill post in everything else'

Read about the moving kerbs. Unlucky.

I can contact a reliable laser cutter and also prepare and nest the drawings for production. I'll also do a 3D illustration for those that are interested.

Also, if the original is to be painted over and a custom cutout top piece fitted, we can customise the lettering / design (say paint the original insert black and put the aluminium over the top). Just a though - that way, only the overall dims matter. All input welcome...

Since there seems to be only one, it would be a shame to start a bidding war! I'm still for the manufacturing approach if anyone is still up for it.

you can get the iserts from ebay in France with reverse in the same place.
i ordered one, cost me £17 quid, it's silver/chrome effect made from plastic with grooves so won't wear away.

looks a million times better than the tatty bit of renault kit in my opinion - will also save you a load of hassle
