Soundproofing?

Postby longtallted » Fri Oct 02, 2009 12:07 pm

While thinking about upgrading the standard audio in my 5 door, I started looking around at soundproofing info, which there seems to be a lot of from various specialists and at least one (Sound Killer UK) sells kits specifically for various makes of cars (not just in the cabin, but for the boot, under the bonnet, etc.). Whatever I upgrade on the ICE front will be much happier if I don't have so much road/engine/outside noise intruding into my ears - sound logical? Has anybody had any experience of doing this? Are there any DIY mods that make a difference (the soundproofing mats, tapes and other guff aren't particularly cheap...)?

When i changed all my speakers i dynamatted the front doors(that was a pain) and behind the rear quarter panels i put fibre glass insulation stuffed down to kill vibration and what not. I found the road noise was quite bad in the meg and the dynamat helped but as i dont ride in the back i cant say if thats worked.
I have also put some underlay we had left over from doing the new house under the megs carpet. and thats made a big difference to sound. At 90mph when you pause the stereo all is quiet :). Fairly cheap DIY mods that make a nice difference :-).

Dynamat isnt major money and i had the underlay already but thats barely anything either.

i recomend using dynamat...everything else just doesn't come close. You can use second skin, but its a bit of a hassle to install.
