I love my wife
My silly car decided to force me to do the "hand shredding" ritual as the light bulb died on me. This is now bulb number 3.
After scratching my hand to numbness my wife took over and had it changed in 30 seconds flat. (Show off)
Eventhough I am and will be eternally grateful I get the distinct feeling she is going to claim to be a better mechanic than I am.

Re: I love my wife
Why not just buy HID bulb if you have a phase 2 (Concave lens).
You wont have the problem again plus a much stronger light.

Re: I love my wife
The HID (high intensity discharge) is not road legal as far as I know. At least not here in Denmark. That's why I will have to put the old bulbs in when I go for MOT. It did not keep me though from putting them on my car, the reason beeing too many bulbs that died in a relatively short period (lights are compulsory 24h in Denmark), and the size of my hands. Lights are now much stronger, you feel it especially when driving in rain (6000K), and rain is something we get a lot here in Denmark.

They are two different technologys. A normaly bulb uses a tungston filliment with current passed though it, this in turn glows to produce light. In a HID bulb there are two electrodes with an inert gas between them. The current 'arcs' accross the gas giving off light. The result is a light which is more in line with natural sun light and so easer on the eyes with a greater coverage.
HID bulbs however require a ballest to bump 12Vs close to 30,000Vs in order for the arc to take palce. So its not a straight swap of a bulb.
Personaly i will never go back to to a filliment bulb.
One of the other aspects i love is the 'expensive' blue tint they give off when viewed at a particular angle.

Re: I love my wife
One thing I will add, with HID bulbs it is imperative that you have the phase 2 head lights or an aftermarket set with the CONCAVE LENS as this desperesses the light evenly and when aligned gives a visible cut of level so not to blind other drivers.
If a 'regular' head light unit is used the light will disperse uncontrolled and blind all on coming drivers.
With in the UK it is a legal requirement to have working head light washers with HID bulbs. Will be a MOT fail if you don’t.

What is the washer for more for cooling down or what is its importance or am I being silly?

The washer is to clean the crap off the lens as this will refact the beam to the distraction of other drivers.
Its is an easy mod to take a link from the head lamp washer line and retro fit washers to the bumper.

Re: I love my wife
Ill argue that point. I have fitted after market HID bulbs and had the, aligned correctly with all the required hardware.(little money spent) I have but two weeks ago sailed through my MOT without a question asked. With a certificate of pass.(NI GOV run MOT centre)
Again, I shall never run with filament bulbs after trying HID’s
