Postby dougieCC » Fri Mar 13, 2009 8:43 pm

Hopefully someone can help.......the last few days started ok, no noise like described for the dreaded dephaser pully and never stalls. However today started car after standing over night reves drop right down attempt to put a few revs on drops to the point of stalling then picks up, again no rattle just poor cold starting ? dont know where to start. apart from this I love it and averaging 39.9 mpg.

Help

Check the stored fault codes and the live engine parameters. If nothing suspicious, then it can be the fuel filter, dirt in the throttle body or dephaser control valve. The latter two options may be related to the use of the "minimum specification" oil.

See the manual for the full algorithm of fault finding (in our Links section).

Check the Canister bleed solenoid valve. If it is stuck open it draws false air when cold starting
You can check this by blowing and sucking through the valve(if that the case, the valve is faulty)
No service or OBD light comes on when this is the case.I have seen this valve faulty a lot with syndromes like you descripe.

its on the right side(driver side)black near the bulkhead, with two pipes entering on the top and bottom of the sensor
There are 2 wires on the connector to it.
disconnect everything and try to do what I said earlier
Good luck

You are right, the fuel filter is in the tank and it not serviceable.

Regarding the spark plugs. A special insulating grease must be used every time the coils are removed. There is a Technical Note about it. This may be one of reasons why many cars fail directly after servicing.

I wrote the following to somebody else, but it might be of interest to you as well:
"The sticky stuff is the grease part number 82 00 168 855 applied according to the technical note 3789A. As I understand the coils must not be removed unless one is prepared to renew the grease coating.

The Green Note 4242A is about the coil types. It says that if a SAGEM coil fails and its production date is before "330-3", then all four coils must be replaced by DENSO. It is emphasized that the dates must be checked without removing the coils. If a single DENSO coil fails, then just one coil is replaced."

All original technical information can be found in the Dialogys CDs often sold on ebay. They can be also downloaded from Internet, usenet or p2p networks. A link to PDF docs in our Links.

dougieCC,

What about cleaning the throttle body? It is common problem and there exists a tech. note issued by Renault on this subject.

Regarding the dephaser control valve. I guess, it can be affected by dirty oil. However, if it is stuck, then there should be a fault code logged. The feedback to the ECU is provided through the camshaft position sensor.

PS: use only good quality oil filters. The OEM Purflux is one of the best in the sense that its filter element area is the largest and it does collapse (thus sending the accumulated dirt into the system).

Cheers AlexB, will check it out friday when I plan to do oil and filter, after popping to renault for the filter and sump washer. The car started fine today as it was warmer.
