I now have this mod fitted to my vehicle,

do not attempt this mod unless you are good at fiberglass work and soldering iron work ect as it is not easy and it is easy to damage the instrument panel which would be very costly as each one is coded to the car, i managed it but not using fiberglass as i tried it but got it everywhere, i carefully cut between the instrument dials with a dremel until the gps unit fitted in, i then blanked off the back of the lights with tape so the original stop/service/alarm armed lights do not flash through.
i then rubbed down the removable cover from the gps unit and sprayed the instrument dial area and the gps cover with matching black paint.

i was going to use the starter button to turn the unit on/off but this did not work so i used a small push to make button from maplin and positioned it below the steering wheel.
the gps sensor is located under the clock unit also all cabling goes down to the back of the radio from this point.
i used a 3.5mm plug into the gps unit and fabricated a wire to plug it into the rear of my radio aux connector (update list unit)

cost - 105 for a second hand gps unit
10 - 15 for swithc paint ect
now works fine and looks good!!

You just have to post a pic of your work! Glad to see I'm not alone anymore...more of these and people will think they're a standard option. ;)
