CLutch pedal making crack noise??????

This started yesterday, every now and again when pressing the clutch pedal it would make a rather loud crack noise but the clutch still worked fine, today it happened more frequently and at one point had no clutch but after pulling the pedal back up and pressing down (i had to repeat this about 4 times) it worked fine and has not made the crack noise again! I haven't got a clue about cars so need some advice.

The car is a 1.6 vvt on a 52 plate with 40k on the clock.

sounds a bit like a mechanical prob....grab a flashlight and crawl to the lower drivers area...maybe you can see somtehing. I know of the Laguna II that it quite frequentliy spits out the spring that returns the clutch pedal after pressing it.....

Well its either a problem with the clutch pedal assembly or the master cylinder (the hydraulic assembly that engages/disengages the clutch when you press the pedal)

I get a noise on the clutch every few weeks when it first happened i thought something was on its way out. Turned out its the car mat which creeps forward gradually until the clutch pedal when pressed goes under the corner of the mat then when i let go the mat slaps back to the floor and the pedal feels like its jumping up!!!

It definetly isn't the floor mats, it's unmistakebly something to do with the clutch! its weird now though cos it's been totally fine for about 100 miles now! which is probably more annoying !

If it only comes when you push the clutch peddle then it might just be the clutch spring, which should be under £5 but need someone to put it in. Had mine done in my previous car a corsa for £10.
