Ignition Coils
Hi,
i know this topic concerning the toxic fume filter and ignition coils has been done to death. My megane (2003) is suffering from this problem. I was planning on changing the coils myself tonight , but was just wondering if anyone else has changed them manually, will this stop or the toxic fume light from flashing on the dash, or will i have to take it to a dealer to get this reset?
Cheers

Re: Ignition Coils
Should clear the fault after a couple of restarts, if not it's off to the stealers

Make improvements, not excuses!

Thats what i was afraid of, i had phoned my local stealer (charles hurst belfast) they said to replace a single igination coil would be £111, and said it would be £230 to replace all four!!!!.... which of course he then continued to say i would be best getting them all replaced!

Re: Ignition Coils

i asked local dealer the price of coils last week when i picked up some car mats and he said they are £40 (he didnt even have to look the price up, just rolled straight of his tongue

if you are with aa/rac, phone them, they carry spares at £40 with 2 year warranty.

Midge
I had this problem myself. Try GSF in Boucher Place for ignition coils - 4 coils ('Beru' brand) cost just over £75 and they're easy to change. Ease the plastic engine cover off (if you have one) and disconnect the electrical connectors at the top of each ignition coil. Then remove the bolts holding each coil in - a 10 ml socket will do if you're careful. The coils will lift out easily and replacement is straightforward (i.e. the reverse of removal).
I changed mine on a Monday night and by Wednesday afternoon the warning lights had gone out (approx 6-8 restarts). It runs fine now.
Hope this helps, Regards

Hi Ian,
Cheers for the suggestion of GSF, was going to get them of ebay but think i will just go to them instead at least i will know im getting geniun parts! just wanted to ask tho, you say "Ease the plastic engine cover off (if you have one)"...... in my post above that is a photo of my cars engine so do you mean remove the whole black bit which has Renault 16v written on it? Is this neccessary or can i just remove the electrical connectors of the ignition coils then the bolts to release them?
Cheers
Re: Ignition Coils
Midge, I have a 2004 Scenic which has a silver plastic engine cover.
Judging by your picture, you can access the ignition coils without having to remove anything else.

Ian

Re: Ignition Coils
Cheers Ian,
I think that if i remove the electrical connectors the coils should just come out. so hopefully shouldnt be a problem.
cheers for helping me clear up that. i shall give it ago tonight if the weather clears up but at the moment its not looking likely

Re: Ignition Coils
only do this when the engine is cold.
It's the simplest of DIY jobs.
just unclip the wiring connector, they come off by squeezing the end and pulling
- (like a peg)
then using a small 10m socket (the sort that comes as an addon to a screwdriver set) unbolt the securing nut.
then just lift the coil upwards to remove.
refitting is simple, some say the new coil's should be greased with a special grease(£40 from renault), but i think most people just put them on dry.
push the wiring clip back on and ensure you hear a nice "click" as it seats correctly.
the car should run smootly straight away, even if the light stays on for a day or 2.
incidently i went to GSF for a set of Beru coils and they gave me some substitute ones called "Bremi", they said they were better than Beru, i was sceptical at the time, but they are still ok after 6 months.

Re: Ignition Coils
everyone run! i've just had a thought.....
when the light is flashing, the manual says to reduce the revs till it goes off then consult a dealer, so (in theory) if you change the coils, the light should stop flashing straight away?

Cheers Markren much appricative for the tips, i wasnt actually to sure as how to remove the electrical connector but now i do.

Re: Ignition Coils
Right here's the story at lunch time there i did the testing on the ignition coils. on the picture above i pulled out the 1st & 2nd coil on the left and the engine didnt stall but u could here it drop a little. when i pulled the electrical connector on the 2 coils on the right the car stalled on both.
so take it this means that i need 2 new coils?
Just asking i was expecting nothing to happen on the faulty coils, altho the car didnt stall on the 2 i suspect, you could hear the engine tone drop and vibrate more when they were removed.
Any1 any ideas?
