Thanks for your help - it is much appreciated. I think I know where the ignition coils are, and apparently its a 10mm socket I need. Might have a go if I get no joy on Wednesday!

Out of interest, whats the best method for identifying failing coils - or should I just replace all four.

I have just spoken to a local parts company specialising in french car parts, and they can do BERU PENCIL COILS (part no R92507) for £19.70ea+VAT so I make that to be just over £90 for all four!

Any more advice would be much appreciated! :)

Thanks for all your help so far!

when it went on mine, it sounded like a bag of spanners, and i rang the RAC out, He told me the best way was to find which coil has gone it to change them one at a time, start the engine, see if it made any difference, if it didnt, move on the next one, and so on.

Some people recomend to change all four, rac said he usually changes two but only had one on him at the time. I havnt bothered changing the others and it's running fine for the moment.

thats a good price for coils, i had to pay the RAC £40.95 for one, the spare I got was a Sagem one at £34. Do they do mail order? as you say at that price, it'd be tempted to swap the lot.

I would imagine that someone with a bit more knowledge will come along at some point, because the bits I know are all from experience.

Thanks again for your help andywills. I will have a look under the bonnet tonight and see if I can see what's what!

They do have mail order and a web site, as well as branches in the UK - its www.gsfcarparts.com. I followed a van with their advertising on this morning on the way into work - and they have a branch five minutes away! Good coincidence I think!

I'll let you know what I get up to once I've had a look under the bonnet tonight - and once its been back to Renault on Wednesday!

Thanks again for all your help - as you say, it may only be bits and bob's that you have picked up over the years, but it's very kind of you to share your knowledge.

Cheers again!

i bought my megane a few months ago 2nd hand 05 plate 1.4 rush. My toxic fumes warning light came on today and after reading all the advice on here i'm stuck on 4 things to do.

1. take it to the renault dealer for them to have a look at.
2. call the AA and let them have a look at it
3. assume its the igniton coils and buy some and change them myself.
4. take it to another garage and hope they find the problem bbut for cheaper than renault.

anyone got any advice for me if not will take it to renault tomorrow.
thanks scott

to be honest, i would wittle that down to 2 choices,

you could leave it till tomorrow and limp it to the dealer (only if it is still under warranty), but, if it is a coil, the unspent fuel makes it way into the cat, and this unspent fuel could burn in the cat and damage it, or

get the aa to do it (they will diagnose it and charge you for the coil) but, the chances are the dealer will probably turn around and say because they didnt diagnose it, its not their problem. if this happens, i would get straight onto renault gb and complain about the dealer, inturn, they will either reimburse you or give you;ll get the following...

"I am sorry to hear of the problems you experienced with the coils on your vehicle. We take all reports of customer dissatisfaction with our vehicle very seriously and I appreciate that you have gone to the trouble of informing us in the hope that we may better understand your experience. Your letter has been documented on our complaints system and may be used in conjunction with our auditing process, to raise service levels in the future."

i.e, there rubber stamp and delete reply...

Was your toxic fume warning light flashing or on solid. Also, if flashing, has it stayed on or was it just on for a short while?

Cheers.

The light starts off flashing then stays on.
Its not under warranty that finished in march so don't know what to do. Is it only a renault dealer that can sort this problem or can i take it to a local garage?

Thanks everyone for the advice.
Just called the AA and they came out found the problem straight away was just the one coil misfiring. i bought all 4 coils and plugs from my local parts shop for £100 and the AA bloke fitted them free of charge. So a tip for anyone thats with AA or RAC try them first before taking it in to a garage or dealers worked out alot cheaper for me (if your cars not under warranty)

Hi Scott,

Glad you are all sorted and back up and running! 8-)

Out of interest, is it neccessary to change plugs (spark plugs I assume) at the same time as coils? Most things I have read just refer to changing the coils?

Many thanks.

Well its not always necessary but when mine were checked one was a mess and needed to be replaced and they do the spark plugs in sets of 4 so i changed ask the AA bloke to change them all for me sometimes the broken coil can cause the plug to go as well so its worth checking both. saved me alot of hassle

Hi guys. I have a 2005 1.9 DCi with 80K on the clock. The toxic fume warning light has come on, but there is no noticiable affect on the performance. Would this be the coils?
Thanks

right, just had it in at a Non Renault garage. The diagnostics showed a fault on the EGR unit / sensor. The mechanic un-plugged the electrical connector and and re-mounted. The dash lights have gone out, but apparently the fault is still registering. It is back in tomorrow for a better investigation. It could be just a case of having it cleaned?
I'll keep you posted on the outcome.
