CAMBELT CHANGE COST

Postby REDDERS » Tue Dec 18, 2007 8:39 pm

Had a bit of a shock today when i went into wests of kings lynn to enquire the costings of cambelt change.I can buy the belt, tensioner & aux.belt direct from the parts dept. at trade & went to service reception for final costings inc.labour.Only £355 inc vat !!!!!!!
Now i know i will get 'genuine parts',a loan car and hopefully a no quible warranty, but at a price.
Has anyone else had a belt change on a 120 dci, & what was your price, also does anyone know the manufacurer of the belt ? ie.goodyear,conti,etc.

Does seem a bit steep, but does that price include changing the water pump?

Normally the water pump is changed as it has a tendancy to go after the cambelt has been changed meaning everything has to be stripped down again :(

Have you got any friends in the trade who can do this for you at half the price?

I will be using MGC Servicing in Nottingham if that is of any help to anybody?

They did my Fiat JTD cambelt well and cheaply and do all my Megane work I can't do.

I've been in the trade all my working life,so i have many contacts in the 'small workshop'area,it's just that being self employed i don't want to lose a days work,i would get a loan car from wests,& IF anything did go wrong after the belt was changed,at least everything is'renault supplied'.Yes,i've had a quote of 2.5 hrs @ £30 per hr,and i can supply my own parts, either genuine or via motor factor.

If it was me I would trust my own abilities and due it myself, obviously from what you say you don't have time.

If I was in your position I would go for genuine Renault parts fitted by a trusted local garage. They have the same legal responsibilities if anything should go wrong. You also have a better chance of it being done by a qualified mechanic if you take that route.

Whatever you do get the water pump changed at the same time as in my experience must timing failures are caused by one or other pulley bearing failure in the belt train. The water pump effectively is just one of these and as such just as likely to fail. If it did you would have the whole job to do over again, plus the cost of any resulting engine damage :( :(

Hope thats of some use.
